﻿{"id":191059,"date":"2016-03-18T15:49:53","date_gmt":"2016-03-18T22:49:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=191059"},"modified":"2016-03-18T16:03:08","modified_gmt":"2016-03-18T23:03:08","slug":"georgias-brittany-maclean-wins-close-battle-200-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/georgias-brittany-maclean-wins-close-battle-200-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia&#8217;s Brittany MacLean Wins Close Battle for 200 Free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Georgia&#8217;s <strong>Brittany MacLean<\/strong> held off a stacked field to win the women&#8217;s 200-yard free at the 2016 NCAA Division I Women&#8217;s Championships.<\/p>\n<p>MacLean, who had to come back from the middle of the pack at the halfway mark, turned up the heat down the stretch to win in 1:42.42. \u00a0That swim moved her up to 10th all time in the event&#8217;s history, and delivered Georgia an NCAA-record tying seventh victory in the event&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Georgia Winners:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2000 Maritza Correia, Georgia, 1:57.33 *<br \/>\n2006 Kara Lynn Joyce, Georgia, 1:43.96<br \/>\n2010 Allison Schmitt, Georgia, 1:42.84<br \/>\n2011 Allison Schmitt, Georgia, 1:42.08<br \/>\n2012 Megan Romano, Georgia, 1:41.21<br \/>\n2013 Allison Schmitt, Georgia, 1:41.85<\/p>\n<p>MacLean returned to the top of the podium for the first time since winning the 500 and 1650 free her sophomore year.<\/p>\n<p>Louisville&#8217;s <strong>Mallory Comerford<\/strong> nearly gave the Cardinals a second title in a row with a 1:42.54 for second. \u00a0That&#8217;s just .12 back of MacLean. \u00a0That&#8217;s not the record for the closest 200 free in NCAA meet history, however, as North Carolina&#8217;s <strong>Jessi Perruquet<\/strong> and Auburn&#8217;s <strong>Heather Kemp<\/strong> tied for the title with 1:45.01s in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford&#8217;s<strong> Lia Neal<\/strong> claimed third in 1:42.58 with Georgia&#8217;s <strong>Hali Flickinger<\/strong> picking up fourth in 1:43.32.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan&#8217;s <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> (1:43.35), Virginia&#8217;s <strong>Leah Smith<\/strong> (1:43.50), Indiana&#8217;s <strong>Haley Lips<\/strong> (1:43.72) and Indiana&#8217;s <strong>Kennedy Goss<\/strong> (1:44.75) turned in the rest of the championship final finishes.<\/p>\n<pre><b>                            === A -
