STANFORD, California, October 3. THE Stanford women's swimming team got their season off to a good start with a 170-102 dual meet victory over San Jose State from the Avery Aquatic Center on Friday afternoon. The Cardinal were led by Kate Dwelley and Sam Woodward who each had two event wins.<\/p>\n
Stanford got off to a strong start in the meet when they swept the top three places in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Elaine Breeden, Liz Smith, Woodward and Julia Smit finished with a time of 1:42.50, capturing the event. Their time was an impressive early season swim, just short of the National "B" Qualifying Standard.<\/p>\n
In addition to being a part of the winning medley relay, Woodward won the 50 and the 200 freestyle. The Stanford freshman finished with a time of 23.27 seconds in the 50 free and 1:50.72 in the 200 free.<\/p>\n
Also with multiple event wins was Kate Dwelley. The Stanford sophomore captured the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:03.52 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.82 seconds.<\/p>\n
The Cardinal also got event wins from Breeden and Smit who represented the United States in the Olympic Games from Beijing this past summer. Breeden won the 100 free with a time of 51.63 seconds, while Smit captured the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.12.<\/p>\n
Other event winners for the Cardinal were Angela Duckworth in the 1,000 free (9:58.12), Liz Smith in the 200 back (2:03.49), Kerry Kraemer in the 200 breast (2:19.54) and Whitney Spence in the 500 free (4:57.66)<\/p>\n
In diving, the Cardinal got a pair of impressive results. On 3-meter, Meg Hostage won the event with a National "A" Standard score of 292.43. On 1-meter, Mary Beth Corbett made her Stanford debut by winning the event with a National "B" Standard score of 255.60.<\/p>\n
