﻿{"id":190679,"date":"2016-03-17T10:23:21","date_gmt":"2016-03-17T17:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=190679"},"modified":"2016-03-17T10:37:22","modified_gmt":"2016-03-17T17:37:22","slug":"michael-andrew-katie-drabot-dominate-day-3-prelims-at-ncsa-junior-nationals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-andrew-katie-drabot-dominate-day-3-prelims-at-ncsa-junior-nationals\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Andrew, Katie Drabot Dominate Day 3 Prelims at NCSA Junior Nationals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Indie&#8217;s <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> put up some sizzling times for a 16-and-under swimmer with a pair of top seeds, while Ozaukee&#8217;s <strong>Katie Drabot<\/strong> set herself up for several title opportunities tonight at the 2016 NCSA Junior Nationals.<\/p>\n<p>Prelims are being swum in short course yards, while finals are being contested in long course meters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women&#8217;s 200 free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>City of Mobile&#8217;s <strong>Paige Madden<\/strong> led the way with a lifetime-best effort of 1:45.68. \u00a0CSP Tideriders&#8217; <strong>Genevieve Pfeifer<\/strong> clocked a 1:45.92 to earn the second seed heading into tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Ozaukee&#8217;s <strong>Katie Drabot<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/1-ranked-recruit-katie-drabot-chooses-stanford\/\" target=\"_blank\">who is heading to Stanford after her senior year<\/a>, qualified third in 1:46.42.<\/p>\n<p>Xcel&#8217;s <strong>Riley Gaines<\/strong>, just 15, was the youngest swimmer to make the top eight as she qualified fourth in 1:47.63.<\/p>\n<p>North Bay&#8217;s <strong>Mikaela Dahlke<\/strong> (1:47.84), Long Island&#8217;s <strong>Cara Treble<\/strong> (1:48.09), Wild&#8217;s <strong>Ella Tierney<\/strong> (1:48.10) and Long Island&#8217;s <strong>Kristen Romano<\/strong> (1:48.11) also made the finale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s 200 free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Metro Atlantic&#8217;s <strong>Dean Farris<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ivy-league-receives-loads-of-verbal-commitments-for-the-class-of-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\">a future Harvard swimmer<\/a>, cut a second off his lifetime best with a 1:36.00 to lead qualifying.<\/p>\n<p>NCAP&#8217;s <strong>Samuel Pomajevich<\/strong> turned in a second-seeded effort of 1:36.87 with Dayton Raiders <strong>Thomas Cope<\/strong> (1:37.23) and<strong> Cody Bybee<\/strong> (1:37.26) qualifying third and fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Machine&#8217;s<strong> James Murphy<\/strong> tied Bybee with a 1:37.26 for fourth as well, while <strong>Aaron Schultz<\/strong> (1:37.30), <strong>Samuel Steele<\/strong> (1:37.69) and <strong>Trey Freeman<\/strong> (1:37.72) comprised the rest of the top 8.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women&#8217;s 50 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New Trier&#8217;s <strong>Ingrid Wall<\/strong> turned in the top time this morning in the sprint breast with a 28.01, just missing moving into the 27-second range.<\/p>\n<p>York&#8217;s <strong>Jacqueline Clabeaux<\/strong> qualified second in 28.16 with Long Island&#8217;s <strong>Margaret Aroesty<\/strong> continuing her success here at the meet with a 28.29 after winning the 100 breast.<\/p>\n<p>Grosse Pointe Gators&#8217; <strong>Alexis Wenger<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/alexis-wenger-lowers-13-14-100-breast-nag-record-nearly-cracks-100\/\" target=\"_blank\">who set the 13-14 100 breast NAG record here last year<\/a>, put up a 28.54 to qualify fourth. Now 15, Wenger is looking at a new set of marks to chase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Halle Morris<\/strong> (28.94), <strong>Anna Shumate<\/strong> (29.01), <strong>Ema Rajic<\/strong> (29.02) and <strong>Madeleine Vonderhaar<\/strong> (29.02) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s 50 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the most high-profile rivalry of the meet, Indie&#8217;s <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> turned in the top seed with a 24.24, while Penn Charter&#8217;s <strong>Reece Whitley<\/strong> posted a 24.69. \u00a0The two 16 year olds will battle tonight in the long course version of the sprint.<\/p>\n<p>Although USA Swimming does not track 50-yard stroke events for National Age Group records, the Swims Database does have some of those times. \u00a0Andrew previous was the second-fastest 16-and-under with a\u00a024.74, but his time far surpassed the listed top time of 24.68 from <strong>Max McHugh<\/strong> from a month ago. \u00a0Whitley, meanwhile, moved up to an unofficial third.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Cope<\/strong> of the Dayton Raiders qualified third in 25.02 with <strong>Jacob Montague<\/strong> earning fourth in in 25.14.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caleb Hicks<\/strong> (25.49), <strong>Daniel Chang<\/strong> (25.58), <strong>Dillon Hillis<\/strong> (25.63) and <strong>Brandon Tran<\/strong> (25.65) comprised the rest of the top eight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women&#8217;s 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ozaukee&#8217;s <strong>Katie Drabot<\/strong>, who already earned a victory last night, cruised to a 2:12.99 in the 400-yard IM today. \u00a0She&#8217;s well ahead of the rest of the pack heading into long course finals tonight.<\/p>\n<p>NCAP&#8217;s <strong>Eireni Moshos<\/strong> turned in a second-seeded time of 4:14.26, while <strong>Halladay Kinsey<\/strong>, 15, picked up a 4:14.93 to cut massive time off her personal best in the 4:18 range.<\/p>\n<p>Long Island&#8217;s <strong>Margaret Aroesty<\/strong> (4:14.99) and <strong>Kristen Romano<\/strong> (4:16.53) qualified fourth and fifth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexis Preski<\/strong> (4:16.54), <strong>Mikayla Herich<\/strong> (4:16.99), and <strong>Alexis Yager<\/strong> (4:17.04) will also compete in the A final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NOVA&#8217;s <strong>Frederick Schubert<\/strong> picked up the top time in the morning with a 3:47.04, more than two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.<\/p>\n<p>Schubert&#8217;s teammate <strong>Charles Swanson<\/strong> qualified second in 3:49.74 with FAST&#8217;s Nicholas Alexander taking third in 3:50.61.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Cope<\/strong> earned another A final spot with a fourth-seeded 3:51.73, while NOVA&#8217;s <strong>Aaron Schultz<\/strong> snared fifth in 3:52.18.<\/p>\n<p>NCAP&#8217;s<strong> Samuel Pomajevich<\/strong> (3:53.14), Machine&#8217;s <strong>Casey Storch<\/strong> (3:53.72) and NCAP&#8217;s <strong>Will Cumberland<\/strong> (3:54.37) also earned championship heat spots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women&#8217;s 50 fly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ozaukee&#8217;s<strong> Katie Drabot<\/strong> earned a third A final spot, and second top seed, with a 24.17 in the sprint fly. \u00a0Look for her to push the pace tonight in the long course event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amalie Fackenthal<\/strong>, 15, turned in a 24.24 to qualify second tonight, while Ozaukee&#8217;s <strong>Skylar Fore<\/strong> (24.32) and NCAP&#8217;s <strong>Kylie Jordan<\/strong> (24.38) qualified third and fourth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taylor Pike<\/strong> of the Aquahawgs qualified fifth in 24.42 with DADS&#8217; <strong>Emma Stephenson<\/strong>, 14, putting up a sixth-seeded 24.51.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jasmine Hellmer<\/strong> (24.52) and <strong>Cailey Grunhard<\/strong> (24.66) also earned spots in the finale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s 50 fly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indie&#8217;s <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> just missed posting his best 50-yard fly ever with a 21.37 this morning. \u00a0That swim was just off his 21.28 from the 2014 NASA Showcase Classic as a 14 year old that stands as the unofficial fastest time by a 16-and-under according to USA Swimming&#8217;s SWIMS Database.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Camden Murphy<\/strong> put up a 21.71 for the second seed this morning, while <strong>Miles Smachlo<\/strong> picked up third in 21.75.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dean Farris<\/strong>, the top seed in the 200 free, qualified fourth in 21.77.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samuel Pomajevich<\/strong> (21.79), <strong>Frederick Schubert<\/strong> (21.81), <strong>John Mahoney<\/strong> (21.96) and <strong>Cody Bybee<\/strong> (22.01) also made their way into the A final tonight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women&#8217;s 400 free relay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ozaukee&#8217;s <strong>Skylar Fore<\/strong> (50.16), <strong>Lillie Hosack<\/strong> (50.95), <strong>Mallory Fox<\/strong> (50.42) and <strong>Katie Drabot<\/strong> (48.63) put up the top time of the morning with a 3:20.16, while NCAP&#8217;s <strong>Eireni Moshos<\/strong> (51.18), <strong>Morgan Hill<\/strong> (49.80),<strong> Jasmine Hellmer<\/strong> (50.05) and <strong>Kylie Jordan<\/strong> (50.02) took second in the morning with a 3:21.05.<\/p>\n<p>Academy Bullets (3:22.63), NCAP-B (3:24.08), Poseidon (3:24.42), Machine (3:24.56), NASA Wildcat (3:24.58), Magnolia (3:24.69) and Northern Kentucky Clippers (3:24.69) put up the rest of the top eight times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s 400 free relay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NOVA&#8217;s <strong>Aaron Schultz<\/strong> (45.06), <strong>Frederick Schubert<\/strong> (44.44),<strong> Charles Swanson<\/strong> (44.75) and <strong>Jacob Johnson<\/strong> (44.49) turned in the top time of prelims with a 2:58.74.<\/p>\n<p>NCAP&#8217;s <strong>Samuel Pomajevich<\/strong> (45.00), <strong>Aidan Pastel<\/strong> (44.97), <strong>Brandon Fabian<\/strong> (45.17) and <strong>James William Jones<\/strong> (43.97) claimed the second seed in 2:59.11.<\/p>\n<p>Dayton Raiders&#8217; <strong>Cody Bybee<\/strong> (44.74),<strong> Dylan Curtis<\/strong> (44.57), <strong>Eric Knowles<\/strong> (45.41) and <strong>Thomas Cope<\/strong> (44.46) rounded out the top three with a 2:59.18.<\/p>\n<p>Machine (2:59.68), Gator (3:01.71), NCAP-B (3:02.67), Metro Atlantic (3:03.06) and SwimStrongsville (3:03.38)
