(Yesterday, Kalyn Keller, 15, of Sun Devils Aquatics, became the first-ever US medalist at the First FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships, when she won silver in the 5K. Here is her latest diary entry in her day-by-day account of her experiences at this historic event.)<\/p>\n
HONOLULU, November 1. ONE more day until the 10k race. We didn't actually swim a 10k event at the US Trials for this meet; instead, our 10k people were picked off of the 5k nationals. <\/p>\n
The coaches and the rest of the team are really confident about our chances of winning medals in the 10k. The guys start pretty early in the morning, and then the girls go afterwards.<\/p>\n
Today was a cloudy day, but it gave me time to do some homework. We had an ocean swim in the afternoon and some of the people who have finished competing got to go around in the kayaks. A word of advice: you need oars to steer the kayak back to shore.<\/p>\n
The ocean is getting clearer every day. Today we saw a lot of turtles and sea slugs. For dinner, the team walked down the ocean and went to a place where we cooked our own meat. It was interesting. <\/p>\n
Hawaii has the most variable weather. Sometimes it is sunny, and you can barely see a cloud in the sky, but it will be raining.<\/p>\n
For now, we have to rest up for all the cheering tomorrow. My roommate, Annie Stein, is leaving to go to National Jr. Team camp tomorrow. I will just have to find another sidekick to walk around the island with me. <\/p>\n
