{"id":189863,"date":"2016-03-09T09:04:54","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T16:04:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=189863"},"modified":"2016-03-09T09:17:49","modified_gmt":"2016-03-09T16:17:49","slug":"performance-of-the-week-abbey-wietzeils-50-freestyle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/performance-of-the-week-abbey-wietzeils-50-freestyle\/","title":{"rendered":"Performance Of The Week: Abbey Weitzeil\u2019s 50 Freestyle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the wealth of long course racing that occurred this week, this week\u2019s Performance of the Week goes to <\/span><b>Abbey Weitzeil <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for her 50-yard freestyle at the 2016 American Short Course Championships down in Austin, Texas. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/abbey-weitzeil-blasts-50-free-american-record\/\"><b>Weitzeil <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crushed the field en route to a shockingly fast 21.12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that surpassed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-womens-division-i-championships-pair-of-american-ncaa-u-s-open-records-fall-to-start-night-on-demand-video-available\/\"><b>Lara Jackson\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2009 record of 21.27 from the 2009 NCAA\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/abbey-weitzeil-scares-50-yard-free-american-record\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recording a 21.42 in prelims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Weitzeil <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came back at night to lead off the 200 free relay in 21.28 before finally smashing the record at the end of the session. The future Cal Bear (who, like fellow Pac-12 sprint star <\/span><b>Simone Manuel, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is taking an Olympic redshirt from NCAA competition this year) now has the fastest 50 yard freestyle in history, which should make the Cal coaching staff very happy. Just last week <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/california-stanford-usc-battle-it-out-on-night-2-of-womens-pac-12-championship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cal junior <\/span><b>Farida Osman <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went 21.32 at Pac-12\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means Cal will have two of the fastest sprinters in history come next fall. Between <\/span><b>Osman, Weitzeil, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the return of <\/span><b>Simone Manuel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(whose PB of 21.32 is tied with <\/span><b>Osman\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expect some <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fast showdowns in the coming years within the Pac-12. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, <\/span><b>Weitzeil <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/andrew-wilson-abbey-weitzeil-santo-condorelli-shine-during-lcm-portion-of-american-short-course-championships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also posted some top long course times in the LCM portion of the competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
