NOTRE DAME, Ind., Oct. 27. THE University of Notre Dame women's swimming team (2-0, ranked 18th in the nation) knocked off the University of Miami in impressive fashion at the Rolfs Aquatic Center, Friday
\nafternoon. The Irish won 12 of 14 races to earn the dual meet victory over the 17th-ranked Hurricanes.<\/p>\n
Junior Kelly Hecking (Rutherford, N.J.) swept both the 100 and 200 backstroke events in 56.90 and 2:04.71, respectively. The Irish backstroke wizard also led off the meet in the 400 medley relay, helping the Irish
\ncapture first place in the race (3:52.83). Senior Kristen Van Saun (Lawrence, Kan.) joined Hecking in the multiple-winner category with two individual victories in the 200 and 500 freestyle.<\/p>\n
Freshman Marie Labosky (Churchville, Pa.) was the hird Irish swimmer to capture two races, winning the 1,000 freestyle (10:05.00) and 200 IM (2:07.05) on the day. Danielle Hulick (Galesburg, Ill.), in possibly the best performance of the meet, won back-to-back races, capturing the 50 (24.68) and 100 (53.02) freestyle. Hulick was also a part of the winning 400 medley team.<\/p>\n
After the first seven events, Notre Dame had built a 104-27 lead to put the meet away at the half-way point.
\nOther individual winners for the Irish included: Allison Lloyd, 100 breaststroke (1:05.66) and 400 medley relay, Lisa Garcia, 200 butterfly (2:05.15) and Amy Deger, 100 butterfly (57.38). <\/p>\n
While the Notre Dame women were overpowering Miami, the men's team improved to 2-1 on the season with a dual meet victory over Kalamazoo. <\/p>\n
The Irish were led once again by their diving contingent, who have not lost in dual meet competition this season. Senior Herb Huesman (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the three-meter event with 298.65 points, then exhibitioned in the three-meter event (where he posted 324.95 points). Sophomore Tony Xie (Granger, Ind.) won the one-meter event for the Irish with 258.89 points.<\/p>\n
The 400 medley relay team of senior Greg Juszli (Hudson, Ohio), Dan Szilier (Norristown, Pa.), (junior) David Horak (Dumfries, Va.) and senior
\nAustin Anderson (Indianapolis, Ind.) got the swimmers off on the right track, capturing the first event of the meet in 3:34.71. <\/p>\n
Sophomore Clay Miller (Mead, Wa.) followed the relay win with a victory in the 1,000 freestyle (9:47.66) to continue the winning trends for the Irish.<\/p>\n
Jonathan Pierce (Newburgh, Ind.) won the 200 Individual Medley(1:58.73), freshman Matt Obringer (Jacksonville, Fla.) captured the 200 backstroke (2:01.99), classmate J.R. Teddy (Spring, Texas) took first in the 500 freestyle (4:43.14) while junior Mike Koss (Aurora, Col.) finished out the Irish individual winners with a victory in the 200 breaststroke
