At Division 3 NCAAs last March, as I waited to walk out for my final I was trying to smile to keep myself positive. One of the little girls who was volunteering by carrying baskets behind the blocks looked at me and said, \u201cYou have a pretty smile. Are you excited?\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d I replied, with the smile becoming a little bit more natural, and some of my nerves easing. \u201cDo you want to win?\u201d she asked. \u201cYes,\u201d I said with a laugh. \u201cWell I hope you win. I think you\u2019re going to do great!\u201d she exclaimed.<\/p>\n

This particular kid basket carrier shared some of her thoughts with me, but I\u2019m sure she had many more over the course of that finals session.<\/p>\n

Here are 37 thoughts of kid basket carriers:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. How fast do I walk?<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Is this lane 4?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Okay, yeah. I\u2019m behind the right lane.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. I feel like a golf caddy.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. But, do golf caddies get paid?<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. I only got pizza for this.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. But, my coach said I\u2019m lucky and that this is a privilege. <\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Wow, this guy\u2019s feet are so big!<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. But his shoes smell! I thought chlorine was supposed to take care of these things.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Why does he hit himself before he swims?<\/span><\/li>\n
  11. Oh, I bet this guy is gonna splash me when he dives in.<\/span><\/li>\n
  12. He has to be eight feet tall.<\/span><\/li>\n
  13. Wow, yup, I\u2019m wet now. Oh, but those timers got soaked! <\/span><\/li>\n
  14. I could never be a timer. They just have to sit there this whole time. I get to walk around.<\/span><\/li>\n
  15. But, I guess adults don\u2019t like to walk as much.<\/span><\/li>\n
  16. Is this girl going to forget to take off her sweatshirt?<\/span><\/li>\n
  17. What if her goggles come off when she takes off her sweatshirt?<\/span><\/li>\n
  18. It probably wouldn\u2019t matter. Maybe if she swam without her goggles and with her sweatshirt still on, I could keep up with her.<\/span><\/li>\n
  19. I wonder if any of these big kids have ever been a basket kid before?<\/span><\/li>\n
  20. How fast do you have to be to get somebody else to carry your stuff, anyways?<\/span><\/li>\n
  21. Why do some of these swimmers have so many things?<\/span><\/li>\n
  22. I\u2019m just wearing shorts but these people have pants and parkas!<\/span><\/li>\n
  23. Okay, I think this is the last event.<\/span><\/li>\n
  24. Nope, that is definitely another group in the ready room.<\/span><\/li>\n
  25. I\u2019m not sure why any of these boys even bother to use headphones. Their music is so loud I can hear it too.<\/span><\/li>\n
  26. Why do they keep putting their phones in the basket with the music still playing?<\/span><\/li>\n
  27. They can almost hear it from the blocks! That must be distracting!<\/span><\/li>\n
  28. Maybe I should turn it off.<\/span><\/li>\n
  29. Nope, I\u2019m not supposed to touch the swimmers\u2019 things.<\/span><\/li>\n
  30. But, would it\u00a0be that big of a deal for them to take three seconds to hit pause?<\/span><\/li>\n
  31. I guess when you\u2019re old and intense you have to focus.<\/span><\/li>\n
  32. When I get older I\u2019ll be intense too.<\/span><\/li>\n
  33. But, I\u2019m still not going to hit myself before I swim. I don\u2019t understand why they do that.<\/span><\/li>\n
  34. Alright, last heat now. This time I\u2019m sure.<\/span><\/li>\n
  35. Look! The swimmer in my lane won again!<\/span><\/li>\n
  36. I must be lucky. <\/span><\/li>\n
  37. When I\u2019m older, and I get to have somebody carry my stuff, I hope they\u2019re a lucky basket carrier too.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    To the age group swimmer who escorted my heat behind the blocks, I don\u2019t know what else went through your head that night, but I know I enjoy reflecting on our short conversation.
