Three teams were separated by five points heading into the 400 free relay. Chaos had ensued throughout the back half of the meet, but Carmel ended up squeaking out a one point lead over second place Zionsville, 216-215.

Carmel had two wins on the day with Senior Troy Li in the 200 free and Junior Charles Vaughan in the 200 IM. Li went 1:38.59 to win the state title in a field with six other seniors and a freshman. Jackson Sandala of Warren Central was second at 1:39.26 and freshman Jacob Destrampe of Franklin Community was third at 1:39.81. Li will be heading to Brown next year.

Vaughan won the 200 IM after a huge back half set him up for the win. Vaughan won against a stacked field that included Fishers senior and Kentucky commit Glen Brown and Chandler Bray of Avon. Vaughan won with a 1:48.13 ahead of Northridge’s Spencer Lehman in second at 1:48.42 and Brown at 1:48.44. Bray was fourth at 1:49.70.

A day after setting the national record in the 100 breast, Chandler Bray of Avon came out to help his team win two relay titles. Bray was the breaststroker on the 200 medley relay team that won with a 1:30.72. Garrett Hammons (24.47), Bray (24.11), Vince Partlow (21.59) and Grant Sprout (20.55) swam on the winning relay. Avon also broke the oldest state record in the books in the 200 free relay with a 1:23.20. Sprout (20.93), Connor Capstick (21.39), Bray (20.60) and Partlow (20.28) broke the record that was held by Carmel set in 1994. Chesterton was second and Zionsville was third in that event.

Bray came back later in the meet to finish his high school career with a 53.82 100 breast win. Bray was a little off his 52.65 from last night, but swam well enough for his first individual state title. Bray also won the Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award. Bray will provide much-needed breaststroke strength for Florida next year. Carmel’s Vaughan was second at 55.23 and Chesterton junior Gary Kostbade was third at 55.42.

The only two-time winner on the day was Zionsville sophomore Jack Franzman in the 50 and 100 free. Franzman won the 50 free at 20.25 and the 100 at 44.93. Franzman also led off the 200 free relay with a 20.13, which was just off of the state record held by Zionsville alum and current Tennessee freshman Kyle DeCoursey.

Ryan Huizing of Carroll, Fort Wayne won the 100 fly with a 48.51 ahead of Partlow and Matt Jerden of Bloomington South. Huizing will be headed to Yale in the fall. Northridge junior Spencer Lehman won the 500 free with a 4:25.60 ahead of Jerden and teammate Seth Cripe.

Zionsville also picked up a win from junior Tyler Harmon in the 100 back at 48.87. Harmon used a stellar last turn to move past Glen Brown for the win. The win for Harmon put Zionsville within one point of the lead after the event.

The announcer notified the confused IUPUI Natatorium crowd that Zionsville had a three point lead on Carmel going into the 400 free relay. Carmel needed to finish at least two places ahead of Zionsville to solidify a state championship. Carroll, Fort Wayne, Carmel and Chesterton were vying for the win and Zionsville was struggling in sixth place. Carmel was in third and Zionsville in fifth at the 300. Tyler Harmon of Zionsville moved into fourth over the anchor leg, but Charles Vaughan of Carmel had overtaken Chesterton for second over the last 25 to clinch the win for Carmel.

Carroll, Fort Wayne ended up winning the relay with Huizing (45.04), Zachary Sagan (47.35), Parker Bull (47.24) and Jackson Kent (45.47) at 3:05.10. Carmel was second at 3:05.50 thanks to Vaughan’s 45.28 anchor leg and Chesterton was third at 3:05.73.

Carmel won the meet with 216 points, Zionsville was second at 215 and Avon was third at 192.

2016 Indiana Boys High School State Championships – Results

By Andy Ross, Swimming World College Intern It wasn’t as dominating as it was two weeks ago, but the Carmel Greyhounds defended their Indiana boys high school state title. With the

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[8
43383,41499,49812,57120,57122,40305,52081,57121,66317,49818,57113,31610,57125,57123,42238,57124,50473,49814,49810,57126,57119
post-187909","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-high-school","tag-andy-ross","tag-chandler-bray","tag-charles-vaughan","tag-connor-capstick","tag-garrett-hammons","tag-gary-kostbade","tag-glen-brown","tag-grant-sprout","tag-indiana-high-school-swimming","tag-jack-franzman","tag-jacob-destrampe","tag-kyle-decoursey","tag-matt-jerden","tag-parker-bull","tag-ryan-huizing","tag-seth-cripe","tag-spencer-lehman","tag-troy-li","tag-tyler-harmon","tag-vince-partlow","tag-zachary-sagan

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v24.3 (Yoast SEO v24.3) -
