Kowal, the Bulldog co-captain who set American and NCAA records in the 100 and 200 meter (sc) breaststroke events and swam on Georgia\u2019s world record-setting 400 medley relay, was named the NCAA\u2019s Woman of the Year.<\/p>\n
Kowal, who set an American record in winning the silver medal in the 200 meter breaststroke at the Sydney Olympic Games, also won an NCAA post-graduate scholarship.<\/p>\n
Thompson, who won three relay gold medals along with a bronze to bring her career total to a record 10\u2014more than any other American woman in any sport\u2014was chosen as Sportswoman of the Year by the Women\u2019s Sports Foundation. Thompson, 27, plans to swim another year before enrolling at the Columbia University Medical School next August.<\/p>\n
