Marquette’s Sam Williams<\/strong> broke a 24-year-old record as the Marquette boys won the 2016 Michigan Upper Peninsula State High School Championships. \u00a0Meanwhile, the Gladstone girls also picked up the meet trophy.<\/p>\n

Girls<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gladstone picked up the Michigan UP title with 281 points. \u00a0Houghton (244), Marquette (241), Kingsford (175) and Rudyard (141) comprised the rest of the top five.<\/p>\n

Marquette’s Allison Halpin<\/strong> won the 200-yard free in 2:06.47. Halpin doubled up with a 1:04.79 to win the 100-yard fly.<\/p>\n

Kingsford’s Peyton Johnson<\/strong> earned the 200-yard IM crown in 2:14.40. Johnson earned another title with a 54.09 in the 100-yard free.<\/p>\n

Gladstone’s Katie Stephenson<\/strong> claimed the 50-yard free in 25.72. Stephenson then won the 100-yard back in 1:04.01.<\/p>\n

Marquette’s Lyndsey Welch<\/strong> took home the 500-yard free in 5:41.89.<\/p>\n

Gladstone’s Sydney Herioux<\/strong> hit the wall in 1:12.40 to win the 100-yard breast.<\/p>\n

Gladstone’s Katie Stephenson, Sydney Herioux, Claire Tembreull and Taylor McFarlane<\/strong> topped the 200-yard medley relay in 1:57.63.<\/p>\n

Gladstone’s Jesse Flath, Sydney Herioux, Kirsten Williams and Lindsey McCann<\/strong> earned the 200-yard free relay title in 1:48.98.<\/p>\n

Gladstone’s Jesse Flath, Claire Tembreull, Anna Burch and Katie Stephenson<\/strong> won the 400-yard free relay in 3:57.48.<\/p>\n

Westwood’s Valerie LaChapelle<\/strong> won the one-meter diving title with 127.75 points.<\/p>\n

Boys<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marquette topped the Michigan UP meet with 326 points. \u00a0Houghton (208), Sault Area (205), Gladstone (175) and Ishpeming-Negaunee (150) took second through fifth.<\/p>\n

Marquette’s Sam Williams<\/strong> demolished the 200-yard IM meet record set back in 1992 with a 1:57.11. \u00a0That time crushed the 2:00.28 set by Byron Shefchik<\/strong> of Houghton.<\/p>\n

Williams returned in the 100-yard breast with another UP record as he clocked a 58.02. \u00a0That cleared the 1:00.29 set by Nathan Rotundo<\/strong> back in 2015.<\/p>\n

Ishpeming-Negaunee’s Peter Leppanen<\/strong> turned in a 1:57.06 to win the 200-yard free.<\/p>\n

Sault Area’s Leevi Olson<\/strong> posted a 22.76 to win the 50-yard free. Olson also won the 500-yard free in 5:18.08.<\/p>\n

Marquette’s Ben Luke<\/strong> topped the 100-yard fly in 57.77.<\/p>\n

Gladstone’s Matthew LeClaire<\/strong> clocked a 50.64 to win the 100-yard free. LeClaire also set a UP record in the 100-yard back with a 54.33. \u00a0That swim beat his record of 54.91 from last year.<\/p>\n

Marquette’s Andrew Kilpela, Matthew Nykanen, Ben Luke and Nathan Brown<\/strong> hit the wall in 1:45.38 to win the 200-yard medley relay.<\/p>\n

Marquette’s Sam Williams, Matthew Nykanen, Ryan Glover and Andrew Kilpela<\/strong> put up a 1:33.15 to win the 200-yard free relay.<\/p>\n

Marquette’s Sam Williams, Nathan Brown, Matt Kurin and Ryan Glover<\/strong> posted a 3:34.18 to win the 400-yard free relay.<\/p>\n
