{"id":186426,"date":"2016-02-20T17:00:55","date_gmt":"2016-02-21T00:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=186426"},"modified":"2016-02-20T17:13:34","modified_gmt":"2016-02-21T00:13:34","slug":"madison-memorial-triumphant-wisconsin-division-1-state-swimming-diving-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/madison-memorial-triumphant-wisconsin-division-1-state-swimming-diving-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Madison Memorial Triumphant Again at Wisconsin Division 1 State Swimming and Diving Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Kaylie Noll, Swimming World College Intern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Division One of the 2016 Wisconsin Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships competed today in Madison, Wisconsin, showcasing many time drops and fierce races.<\/p>\n<p>The boys in the one meter diving competition started off the day in the morning, going through preliminaries, semi-finals, and finals before sophomore <strong>Brandon Spencer<\/strong> from Kenosha Tremper emerged as the victor with a score of 501.90. <strong>Dakota Skenandore<\/strong> of West Bend East\/West placed second with 490.55 points while <strong>Matt Munns <\/strong>from Madison West took third with a score of 475.10.<\/p>\n<p>The swimming events began in the afternoon with the 200 yard medley relay. The team of <strong>Justin Temprano<\/strong> (23.43), <strong>Rory Sanchez<\/strong> (26.60), <strong>Ben Gebhart<\/strong> (22.72), and <strong>Riley Patton<\/strong> (21.14) from Madison Memorial dominated the event, touching first with a time of 1:33.89. Franklin\u2019s <strong>Justin Craig<\/strong> (25.03), <strong>Michael Fischer (<\/strong>26.35), <strong>Will Lennertz<\/strong> (23.78), and <strong>James Kostrzewa<\/strong> (21.23) took second with a time of 1:36.39, while Brookfield Central\/East\u2019s <strong>Tomer Korabelnikov<\/strong> (25.48), <strong>Ben Attenberger<\/strong> (26.69), <strong>Connor Rumpit<\/strong> (23.42), and <strong>Ryan<\/strong> <strong>Linnihan<\/strong> (21.58) came from the outside to swim a combined time of 1:37.17.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200 yard freestyle, junior <strong>Paul DeLakis<\/strong> from Eau Claire Memorial\/North crushed the competition by almost five seconds along with the state record by just under two seconds, winning with a time of 1:36.10. <strong>Danny Larson<\/strong> of Wauwatosa West\/East also had a good swim, dropping almost three seconds to grab second place in 1:40.87. <strong>Garner<\/strong> <strong>Kohrell<\/strong>, representing Appleton North\/Appleton East took bronze home with his time of 1:40.99.<\/p>\n<p>The 200 yard individual medley was won by freshman <strong>Shane Blinkman<\/strong> from Hudson, breaking the 1:50 mark with his time of 1:49.86. Madison Memorial\u2019s Temprano was back for more hardware in the IM, taking second place with a time of 1:52.06, while <strong>Jackson Madonia<\/strong> from Waunakee raced to third in a time of 1:54.20.<\/p>\n<p>For the 50 yard freestyle, <strong>Calvin Hulse<\/strong> from Holmen\/Aquinas\/Onalaska claimed first, out-touching the pack with a time of 21.06. Madison West\u2019 <strong>Aidan Meara<\/strong> placed second with a time of 21.20, while <strong>Luke Hetue<\/strong> from Sun Prairie beat out <strong>Lain Weaver<\/strong> of Madison West by one tenth with a third-place time of 21.47. However, as a sophomore, Weaver will be the only returning member of the top six 50 freestylers next year.<\/p>\n<p>After a break, the meet resumed with the 100 yard butterfly, won by Kenosha Bradford\/Reuther swimmer<strong> Ivar Iverson <\/strong>with a time of 48.66. Weaver of Madison West earned his silver this time around, finishing in 49.02, while Kohrell from Appleton North\/Appleton East rounded out the top three.<\/p>\n<p>The 100 yard freestyle followed with a win by Wauwatosa West\/East\u2019s Larson, touching the wall at 46.00. Madison West\u2019s Meara took home another second with a time of 46.36, while <strong>Elliot Patterson<\/strong> from Madison Memorial was right behind, finishing in 46.46.<\/p>\n<p>The distance race of the day was won by Brookfield Central\/East\u2019s Rumpit, dropping ten seconds to swim a finishing time of 4:34.26. Behind him,\u00a0also dropping time, were <strong>Michael<\/strong> <strong>Draves<\/strong> of Middleton and <strong>Drew Borland<\/strong> of Muskego, each lowering their times to 4:36.11 and 4:39.93, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The 200 yard freestyle relay was taken once again by Madison Memorial, but this time only by a fingernail. <strong>Drake<\/strong> <strong>Horton<\/strong> (22.04), Patton (21.81), Patterson (21.67), and Sanchez (21.11) teamed up to swim a time of 1:26.63. Eau Claire Memorial\/North moved up into second place with a time of 1:26.79, thanks to <strong>Sam Chumas<\/strong> (22.69), <strong>Ben Redman<\/strong> (21.44), <strong>Nathan Sims<\/strong> (22.56), and DeLakis. Madison West\u2019s Weaver (21.75), <strong>Wes Jekel<\/strong> (22.09), <strong>Roy Weng<\/strong> (22.24), and Meara were right behind, coming in third with a time of 1:26.89.<\/p>\n<p>For the 100 yard backstroke, Madison Memorial\u2019s Temprano stole the show, victorious with a time of 49.49. Hudson\u2019s Blinkman took second with a two second drop to 50.44, while sophomore <strong>Alex Wowk<\/strong> from Madison Memorial swam a time of 52.05 to claim bronze.<\/p>\n<p>The last individual event of the meet, the 100 yard breaststroke, Eau Claire Memorial\/North\u2019s DeLakis grabbed another gold, swimming to an impressive 54.81. Iverson from Kenosha Bradford\/Reuther held onto silver, touching the wall at 55.57, while <strong>Maxwell Boehnlein<\/strong> of Neenah finished third in 57.94.<\/p>\n<p>The final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay, went to the strong team of Madison Memorial again. Horton (47.80), Wowk (47.17), Temprano (46.81), and Patterson (46.05) claimed victory with a time of 3:07.83. Eau Claire Memorial\/North were the dark horses, with Redman (48.15), Andrew Vierbicher (48.84), Chumas (48.42), and DeLakis (43.43) teaming up to swim 3:08.84. Madison West\u2019s squad of Weaver (47.68), <strong>Tyler Sato<\/strong> (48.68), Weng (48.04), and Meara (46.43) finished third in 3:10.83.<\/p>\n<p>Going home with a team win this evening was Madison Memorial, claiming its sixth consecutive team championship and 16<sup>th<\/sup> title overall, compiling 314 points.
