The Michigan Wolverines did what they had to for the squad to be in a great position to win the Big Ten title during the final day of prelims at the 2016 Big Ten Women’s Championships.<\/p>\n

With the mile and platform diving still left to go, both of which Michigan has more potential point-scorers than Indiana, the Wolverines put themselves in a good spot to win the Big Ten title this evening. \u00a0Heading into the mile, Michigan has 16 finalists (6\/5\/5), while Indiana has 15 (6\/4\/5).<\/p>\n

Michigan has not won a Big Ten women’s title since 2004, when they beat Penn State 604.5-590.5.<\/p>\n

200 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michigan’s Clara Smiddy<\/strong> led the way for the Wolverines with a top-seeded time of 1:52.11. \u00a0Her teammate Gabrielle DeLoof<\/strong> qualified third in 1:54.89, while Indiana’s Kennedy Goss<\/strong> split the difference with a second-seeded 1:52.95.<\/p>\n

Indiana matched Michigan’s A finalist numbers with Marie Chamberlain<\/strong> qualifying sixth in 1:55.48.<\/p>\n

Indiana picked up an extra finalist compared to Michigan in the 200 back with 5 total qualifiers (2\/2\/1). \u00a0Michigan, who put together a 100+ point event in the 100 back last night with 4 A finalists claimed 4 total finalists in the 200 back today (2\/1\/1).<\/p>\n

Michigan’s Ali DeLoof<\/strong> tied the pool record in the women’s 100-yard free with a time of 48.08. \u00a0That swim equalled the 48.08 clocked by Minnesota’s Stacy Busack<\/strong> back in 2009.<\/p>\n
DeLoof’s teammate Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> gave the Wolverines a 1-3 effort this morning with a third-seeded 48.57. \u00a0Ohio State’s Li Zhesi<\/strong> hit the wall second overall in 48.38.<\/p>\n
Indiana, locked in a battle for the team title, put one through to the A final as Holly Spears<\/strong> qualified seventh in 49.19.<\/p>\n
After the 100 free, Michigan had one more finalist than Indiana heading into tonight. \u00a0Michigan had 10 (4\/2\/4), while Indiana owned 9 point-scoring spots (3\/3\/3).<\/p>\n

Although Indiana had the top names in the event, Michigan’s depth will help them in the 200 breast with 5 finalists compared to Indiana’s 2. After the 200 breast, Michigan ran its finalist tally to 15 (6\/4\/5) with IU sitting at 11 (5\/3\/3).<\/p>\n
