{"id":185806,"date":"2016-02-18T09:54:42","date_gmt":"2016-02-18T16:54:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=185806"},"modified":"2016-02-18T09:54:42","modified_gmt":"2016-02-18T16:54:42","slug":"leah-smith-breaks-500-free-meet-record-acc-prelims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/leah-smith-breaks-500-free-meet-record-acc-prelims\/","title":{"rendered":"Leah Smith Breaks 500 Free Meet Record During ACC Prelims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Chandler Brandes, ACC Beat Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After strong performances Wednesday night, swimmers resumed competition at the 2016 ACC Women&#8217;s Swimming and Diving Championships.\u00a0Thursday morning&#8217;s action saw the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia&#8217;s <strong>Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>posted the fastest time of the morning in the 500, clocking in at 4:32.51 to take the top seed heading into tonight&#8217;s final. That time broke her own meet record of 4:34.35 set in\u00a02014, and she&#8217;ll aim to break her own conference and NCAA record this evening.<\/p>\n<p>NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hannah Moore\u00a0<\/strong>dropped nearly 10 seconds from her seed time to finish second in 4:38.02.\u00a0<strong>Hanne Borgersen\u00a0<\/strong>(4:38.72),\u00a0<strong>Rachel Muller\u00a0<\/strong>(4:39.61),\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(4:42.87),\u00a0<strong>Andrea Kneppers\u00a0<\/strong>(4:43.24),\u00a0<strong>Emma Nunn\u00a0<\/strong>(4:43.31), and\u00a0<strong>Cece Williams\u00a0<\/strong>(4:43.36) round out the top eight.<\/p>\n<p>NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Alexia Zevnik\u00a0<\/strong>touched the wall in 1:57.16 to secure the top spot for tonight&#8217;s final in the 200 IM. She finished fifth in this event at ACCs in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kaitlyn Jones\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.58),\u00a0<strong>Rachael Bradford-Feldman\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.66),\u00a0<strong>Courtney Bartholomew\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.72),\u00a0<strong>Jen Marrkand\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.96),\u00a0<strong>Andrea Cottrell\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.56),\u00a0<strong>Haley Durmer\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.71), and\u00a0<strong>Leah Goldman\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.41) will also compete in the A final.<\/p>\n<p>Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>was the only woman under 22 seconds in the 50 free this morning, finishing in 21.93. Worrell finished second at ACCs and third at NCAAs in this event last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Riki Bonnema<\/strong>, the ACC meet record holder in this event, qualified\u00a0second in 22.02.\u00a0<strong>Ashlyn Koletic<\/strong> (22.21),\u00a0<strong>Caroline Baldwin\u00a0<\/strong>(22.24),\u00a0<strong>Natalie Labonge\u00a0<\/strong>(22.29),\u00a0<strong>Ellen Thomas\u00a0<\/strong>(22.33),\u00a0<strong>Caitlin Cooper\u00a0<\/strong>(22.42), and\u00a0<strong>Maddie Hess\u00a0<\/strong>(22.44) complete the top eight.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia is in good position to\u00a0take over Miami&#8217;s lead after tonight, as they qualified nine swimmers for an A final. NC State will have six swimmers in a final heat, while Louisville will have five.
