MOUNT HOOD, Oregon, July 17. THE first couple of nights at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Mount Hood featured several meet records falling.<\/p>\n
During the first night of action, Amber McDermott, 15, of Salmon Bay Aquatics copped the women's 800 free with a time of 8:53.80. Bonnie Brandon, 14, of MACS took second in 8:57.16, while Dominique Chevalier of North Jeffco finished third in 8:58.78.<\/p>\n
The men's 800 free title went to Blake Worsley of the Denver Hilltoppers in 8:19.18, while Logan Storie of Corvallis Aquatics finished second in 8:19.84. Marcus Guttmann of Lobo Aquatics wound up third in 8:29.70.<\/p>\n
The Colorado Stars team of Kristin Schmid, Caroline Piehl, Jordan Mattern and Missy Franklin when won the women's 200 free relay in 1:46.75, while the Tucson Ford team of Herbie Behm, Ben Aaberg, Adrian Kirkpatrick and Nick Hadinger took the men's 200 free relay in 1:35.31.<\/p>\n
Morgan Scroggy started the second evening of swimming with a winning time of 56.81 in the women's 100 free representing Tualatin Hills. Franklin, 13, finished second in 57.39, while Christel Simms placed third in 57.43.<\/p>\n
Tucson Ford then blistered the men's 100 free with a 1-2, both under the meet record. Lyndon Ferns clocked a time of 48.77, while Roland Schoeman took second in 49.04. The duo cleared the meet record of 50.01 set by Nathan Adrian last year. Worsley captured third in 51.54.<\/p>\n
Bridgette McNally, 15, of Denver claimed the women's 200 breast crown in 2:33.64 with Katie Johnson of North Jeffco (2:34.85) and Libby Brooks of Mt. Hood (2:37.03) rounding out the top three.<\/p>\n
The men's 200 breast title went to Michel DeCarolis of Crimson Aquatics with a meet-record time of 2:19.56. Nicholas Brunger of Denver joined him under the standard with a second-place 2:19.74. John Rasmussen of Mt. Hood held the previous record with a time of 2:20.07 set in 2004. Sam Rowan finished third in 2:20.88. <\/p>\n
Brandon earned the women's 200 back crown in 2:14.32, breaking the 2000 record of 2:15.15 set by Jamie Reid. Franklin, meanwhile, placed second in 2:16.93 with Kirsten Milberg of Denver taking third in 2:18.32.<\/p>\n
Connor McCarroll of Tualatin Hills followed with a win in the men's 200 back in 2:03.84. Austin Ringquist, 15, of Hillsboro placed second in 2:04.59, while Jon Banker of Washington Aquatics clinched third in 2:06.32.<\/p>\n
The women's 200 fly went to Malia Johnson, 16, of Brophy East in a touch-out win over Erin Campbell of Washington Aquatics, 2:18.50 to 2:18.86. Hannah Points of Tigard Tualatin also went 2:18, this time with a 2:18.95 for third.<\/p>\n
While Garth Summers won the men's 200 fly in 2:03.80, the story of the race might have been Dennis Baker, 47, of David Douglas claiming second in 2:04.07. John Wojciechowski, 16, of Brophy East finished third in 2:06.24.<\/p>\n
The night finished with the 200 medley relays. Noriko Inada, Jaclyn Branning, Cimone Miner and Halye Krakoski of Brophy East won the women's race in 1:59.16, while Tucson Ford's Hadinger, Behm, Ferns and Schoeman claimed the men's event in a meet-record 1:43.90.
