SAN JOSE, California, July 17. SAN Jose State University women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins has announced Chris Michelmore as his new assistant coach for the 2008-09 season. His primary responsibility will be on-deck coaching while also assisting Hopkins with recruiting.<\/p>\n
Michelmore has already been with the Spartan program for the past two years as the volunteer assistant coach. San Jose State has matched its program-best finish of fourth place in the Western Athletic Conference in each of those two seasons.<\/p>\n
"I couldn't be happier to have a more influential role at San Jose State," remarked Michelmore. "Over the past couple of years that I have been here, the program has consistently made huge strides, and I can't wait to be a part of the next phase of growth. As far as I'm concerned, the things that we are doing here in terms of training and technique are among the most competitive in the country, and I couldn't be more pleased with the group of student-athletes in our program."<\/p>\n
"I'm thrilled to be able to elevate Chris to the position of full-time assistant," said Hopkins. "He has made great contributions to the program over the last two years as a volunteer assistant, and we are very excited to have him around on a more regular basis. He is a tremendous asset in terms of his knowledge of stroke technique and training programs."<\/p>\n
In addition to his duties at San Jose State, Michelmore is the assistant national team coach under director Pete Raykovich at De Anza Cupertino Aquatics (DACA), a top club program based in Cupertino, Calif. He also utilizes his educational background in assisting the DACA Swim School with its accounting. He had previously been an age group coach since joining DACA in May, 2007, coaching senior-level high school boy's and girl's teams.<\/p>\n
Michelmore grew up in Sacramento, Calif., where he competed for Arden Hills Swimming under head coach Brian Nabeta. He graduated in March, 2006, from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., earning a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a concentration in entrepreneurial management, public accounting and enterprise accounting. A four-year swimmer for the NCAA Division I program and a team captain his last two seasons, Michelmore finished third in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events at the Big West Conference Championship in 2003, 2005 and 2006. He was a senior national qualifier in both.<\/p>\n
Michelmore's coaching career began while attending Cal Poly, as he spent two seasons in charge of the San Luis Obispo High School girl's team. Prior to coming to San Jose, he spent six months as the assistant national team coach and varsity coach at Arden Hills, where he helped guide a number of national and Olympic Trials qualifiers.<\/p>\n
Michelmore has American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Level 3 certification, and is a member of the 2008 class of the ASCA Fellows program. He and his wife, Tina, reside in Campbell, Calif.<\/p>\n
