MONTERREY, Mexico, July 13. IF having a strong showing at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha wasn't enough, Dagny Knutson truly made a mark with five gold medals at the World Youth Championships held in Monterrey.<\/p>\n
On top of triumphs in the 200 and 400 IM individually, and as a member of the 400 and 800 free relay victories, Knutson capped her amazing run with a time of 1:59.78 in the women's 200 free. She led an American 1-2 as Samantha Tucker placed second in 2:00.41. Australia's Ellen Fullerton finished third in 2:01.18.<\/p>\n
The night started with an Italian 1-2 in the men's 100 free. Luca Dotto won in 50.06, while Luca Leonardi finished second in 50.11. Russia's Oleg Tikhobaev took third in 50.33.<\/p>\n
Russia's Olga Detenyuk followed with a win in the women's 200 breast after hitting the wall in 2:25.19. Japan's Keiko Fukudome wound up second in 2:25.39, while Laura Sogar of the U.S. rounded out the top three in 2:26.41.<\/p>\n
New Zealand's Kurt Basset claimed the men's 200 back with a 1:59.67, while Canada's Matthew Swanston finished second in 2:00.53. Poland's Radoslaw Kawecki touched just behind with a third-place 2:00.72.<\/p>\n
Japan's Natsuki Akiyama snared the women's 100 fly title in 59.58 with Italy's Silvia Di Pietro losing the shootout with a second-place 59.60, just .02 seconds behind. Japan's Yui Miyamoto took third in 1:00.05.<\/p>\n
France's Elodie Schmitt grabbed the women's 50 free win in 25.88, edging Canada's Hannah Riordan (25.95) in the splash-and-dash. Sweden's Nathalie Lindborg placed third in 26.01.<\/p>\n
Japan continued its final day success with Yuya Horihata (1:59.03) touching out Italy's Federico Bussolin (1:59.13) and teammate Yosuke Mori (1:59.32) for the top spot on the podium in the men's 200 fly.<\/p>\n
Great Britain's Daniel Sliwinski beat Serbia's Caba Siladji by the slimmest of margins, 28.37 to 28.38, in the men's 50 breast, while Italy's Andrea Toniato took third in 28.40 right behind.<\/p>\n
Great Britain's Christopher Walker-Hebborn, Sliwinski, James Doolan and Robert Bale won the men's 400 medley relay in 3:41.69, while the U.S. picked up the women's 400 medley relay title when Elizabeth Pelton, Sogar, Caroline McElhany and Tucker went 4:06.90.<\/p>\n
