MONTERREY, Mexico, July 12. DAGNY Knutson of the U.S. and Daniel Bell of New Zealand have certainly been making a name for themselves during the World Youth Championships held in Monterrey, Mexico. At the completion of today's swimming, Knutson held four gold medals, while Bell owned a title trifecta.<\/p>\n
Russia's Elena Sokolova opened the afternoon with a triumph in the women's 1500 free. She touched in 16:28.77 for the win, while Greece's Kalliopi Araouzou took second in 16:33.68 and Venezuela's Andreina Pinto placed third in 16:36.33. The win gave Sokolova a distance free sweep after winning the 800 free in earlier action.<\/p>\n
New Zealand's Bell added his third title of the meet in the men's 50 fly when he checked in with a 23.61. Serbia's Ivan Lendjer touched second in 23.97, while Belarus' Pavel Sankovich wound up third in 24.26.<\/p>\n
Grace Loh of Australia dipped under 29 seconds in the women's 50 back to win in 28.83. Brazil's Etiene Medeiros placed second in 29.44, while Elizabeth Pelton of the U.S. rounded out the top three in 29.45.<\/p>\n
The U.S. grabbed gold in the men's 400 IM when Andrew Gemmell hit the wall in 4:21.58. Germany's Jan-David Schepers (4:22.10) and Japan's Keita Sameshima (4:29.93) comprised the rest of the podium.<\/p>\n
The star of the meet thus far, Knutson collected her fourth gold medal when she leadoff the winning women's 400 free relay for the U.S. with a 55.68. She, along with Megan Romano, Pelton and Samantha Tucker, finished the race in 3:43.54 for the title.<\/p>\n
Plenty of semifinal action also took place. Italy's Luca Leonardi paced the men's 100 free in 50.41, while Japan's Natsuki Akiyama (59.47) and Yui Miyamoto (1:00.03) went 1-2 in the women's 100 fly. The women's 50 free top seed went to France's Elodie Schmitt with a 25.91, just ahead of Canada's Hannah Riordan (25.94), while Serbia's Caba Siladji snagged lane four in the men's 50 breast finale with a 28.42 in semis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
