Waukee posted a final score of 244 to become the new state title winners. Despite quicker splits from Bettendorf in the back half of the relay the\u00a0two finished a slim .10 seconds apart with Dubuque Senior&#8217;s relay team of <strong>John Colin<\/strong> (22.77),\u00a0<strong>Andrew Breitfelder<\/strong> (26.46),\u00a0<strong>Jacob Hansen<\/strong> (23.70) and\u00a0<strong>Brandon Sindt<\/strong> (21.10)\u00a0claiming first with a final time of 1:34.03. Bettendorf&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nathan Spencer<\/strong> (23.94),\u00a0<strong>Ryan Schade<\/strong> (26.02),\u00a0<strong>Caleb Aman<\/strong> (23.11) and\u00a0<strong>Grant Nickles<\/strong> (21.06) stopped the clock at 1:34.13.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cameron Kelley<\/strong> of Cedar Rapids Washington surged ahead of the competition in the 200 free to post a winning time of 1:39.50. Johnston&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Stjepan Fiolic<\/strong> grabbed third with a time of 1:40.36, while\u00a0<strong>Aidan Keen<\/strong> of Iowa City West finished third with a time of 1:40.71.<\/p>\n<p>Kelley continued his dominance over the middle distance freestyle events by taking down the 20-year-old state record in the 500 free. Kelley posted a final time of 4:29.96 to better the former record of 4:30.62 set by\u00a0<strong>Jason\u00a0<\/strong><b>Lathrum.\u00a0<\/b>Keen also finished under the former record with a time of 4:30.49 for second.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa City West senior\u00a0<strong>Mark McGlaughlin<\/strong> left it all in the pool for his final state championship beginning with a new state record in the 200 IM. McGlaughlin dashed to a sizzling 1:46.91 to overturn the previous record of 1:49.20 set in 2015 by\u00a0<strong>Alex Walton<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Nick Saulnier<\/strong> (1:49.80) of CR Washington and\u00a0<strong>Caleb Aman<\/strong> (1:52.58) of Bettendorf were second and third respectively.<\/p>\n<p>McGlaughlin claimed yet another\u00a0state record in the 100 free, stopping the clock at 43.64 to improve upon the former record of 44.17 by .53 seconds. Fiolic grabbed second with a time of 45.57, while Johnston&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Grant Fuhr<\/strong> was third with a 46.24.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Iowa City West senior\u00a0<strong>Will Scott<\/strong> maintained his first place seed with a final time of 20.29 in the 50 free. Scott&#8217;s time edged past the former state record of 20.32 set by\u00a0<strong>Chris Eckerman\u00a0<\/strong>in 1993. Fuhr took second with a time of 20.81, and Waukee&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Josh Waltman\u00a0<\/strong>finished third with a 20.98.<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 100 fly was a tight race with seniors\u00a0<strong>Josh Waltman\u00a0<\/strong>of Waukee and\u00a0<strong>John Colin<\/strong> of Dubuque Senior battling for the gold. Colin led Waltman at the half 23.06 to 23.10 but a surge in the back half from Waltman got him to the wall first to stop the clock at 50.01 over Colin&#8217;s 50.16.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa City West continued their record-breaking streak into the 200 free relay where the team of McGlaughlin (20.15) , Keen (21.22),\u00a0<strong>Oliver Martin <\/strong>(21.01), and Scott (20.17) overturned the previous state record of 1:23.99 set in 2013 by Dubuque Senior. The four posted a combined time of 1:22.55. Waukee finished second with a time of 1:24.73, while Johnston took third with a close 1:24.78.<\/p>\n<p>CR Washington&#8217;s Saulnier and\u00a0<strong>Kaleb Donels<\/strong> posted a 1-3 finish in the 100 back. Salnier turned in a time of 49.54 for the gold, while Donels took third with a 51.73. Second went to Colin of Dubuque Senior who stopped the clock with a 50.35.<\/p>\n<p>Newton-Pella&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Isaak Webb<\/strong> grabbed first in the 100 breaststroke with a final time of 56.45 to be the only athlete under the 57-second mark. Cedar Rapids Kennedy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Stefan Kitsos<\/strong> finished second in the event with a time of 57.50, just ahead of Cedar Rapids Jefferson&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Paul Hummell<\/strong> and his time of 57.56.<\/p>\n<p>There was a case of deja vu in the 400 free relay with Iowa City West&#8217;s McGlauglin (44.50), Keen (45.61), Martin (47.03), and Scott (46.04) flying ahead of the competition to grab the gold with a combined time of 3:03.18, just behind their own state record of 3:02.98.
