The 2016 Colorado Girls 5A and 4A High School State Championships began today with fast swims abounding from both divisions.<\/p>\n
Fairview’s\u00a0Brittney Beetcher<\/strong> clocked a 1:52.09 to claim the top seed in the 200 free for tomorrow’s finals. Regis Jesuit’s\u00a0Lindsay Painton\u00a0<\/strong>took second in prelims with a 1:53.28, while\u00a0Pomona’s\u00a0Zarena Brown<\/strong> was third with a 1:53.45.<\/p>\n Beetcher continued her middle-distance prowess with a 4:58.06 finish in the 500 free.<\/p>\n Bailey Kovac\u00a0<\/strong>of Fossil Ridge shaved 2.8 seconds off her entry time of 2:07.55 to finish first in prelims with a 2:04.75. Fairview’s\u00a0Sandra Freeman<\/strong> grabbed second with a 2:05.97, while\u00a0Delaney Smith<\/strong> of Arapahoe took third with a 2:06.57.<\/p>\n The top three qualifiers for the 50 free each stopped the clock under the 23-second mark.\u00a0Laurel Eiber<\/strong> of Arapahoe claimed the top spot with a time of 23.66. Fossil Ridge’s\u00a0Coleen Gillilan<\/strong> and Rock Canyon’s\u00a0Abigail Kochevar<\/strong> turned in strikingly similar times for second and third respectively. Gillilan touched in a 23.88 over Kochevar’s 23.89.<\/p>\n Gillilan wasted no time getting back in the sprinting groove, qualifying first in the 100 fly with a time of 54.41. Regis Jesuit’s\u00a0Amy Lenderink<\/strong> posted a 55.24 for second, while Boulder’s\u00a0Josie Valette<\/strong> was third with a 55.53.<\/p>\n Kylie Andrews<\/strong> of Heritage dashed ahead of the competition to grab the first place seed in the 100 free with a 51.13. Regis Jesuit’s\u00a0Lindsay Painton<\/strong> and Eiber tied for second with a 51.56.<\/p>\n Kochevar rocketed ahead of the competition in the 100 back, stopping the clock at 54.95 to qualify first for tomorrow’s finals.\u00a0Natalie Arky<\/strong> of Mountain Vista posted a 55.64 for second, while Fossil Ridge’s\u00a0Bailey\u00a0<\/strong>Stewert\u00a0<\/b>took third with a 56.10.<\/p>\n Kovac grabbed her second\u00a0first place seed in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.75, shaving over two seconds off her entry time of 1:06.86. Monarch’s\u00a0Courtney Roeber<\/strong> returns as the second place seed with a 1:05.36, while Fossil Ridge’s\u00a0Jayden Glover\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 1:06.03 for third.<\/p>\n Brooke Stenstrom<\/strong> of\u00a0Valor Christian sprinted to the top of the qualifying lists in both the 50 and the 100 free during prelims. Stenstrom, the returning champion in the 50 and 4A State Record holder (23.43), stopped the clock at a quick 23.55, a slim .12 seconds off her record. The senior delivered a final time of 51.54 for first in prelims of the 100 free, but\u00a0Kennedy Quist<\/strong> of Aspen finished close behind with a qualifying time of 51.64.<\/p>\n Lainee Jones<\/strong> of Pueblo South clocked a 1:53.69 to qualify first in the 200 free.\u00a0Alex\u00a0Reddington<\/strong> of St. Mary’s Academy edged out Evergreen’s\u00a0Kate McDonald\u00a0<\/strong>by a shy .14 seconds for second. Reddington posted a 1:54.02 over McDonald’s 1:54.16.<\/p>\n Windsor’s\u00a0Morgan Friesen\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed the first place seed in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.63. Evergreen’s\u00a0Katelynn Kenchel\u00a0<\/strong>took second in prelims with a 2:04.70.<\/p>\n Friesen later added a first place seed in the 100 breaststroke to her accomplishments for the day, stopping the clock at a swift 1:02.52, only .62 seconds off her 4A State Record of 1:01.90 from 2015.<\/p>\n 4A State Record holder\u00a0Cat Wright<\/strong> of Cheyenne Mountain dashed to the top of the qualifying list in the 100 fly with a 57.38. Reddington finished close behind with a 57.56, while Valor’s\u00a0Madison Hoehn<\/strong> claimed the third place seed with a 57.76.<\/p>\n McDonald turned in a time of 5:04.01 for first in the 500 free. Valor’s\u00a0Abbey Owenby<\/strong> grabbed second with a 5:06.58, while Air Academy’s\u00a0Samantha Steigerwald<\/strong> was third with a 5:09.24.<\/p>\n Sabrina Sabadeanu\u00a0<\/strong>of Golden High dashed to a first place finish in the 100 back with a time of 57.21.
