John Mullen, Swimming World Contributor<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best workout exercises for swimmers are those that target performance, strength, and power. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, which means swimmers must be cautious when choosing a dryland workout regimen and a trainer. The truth is many personal trainers are not swimmers and the exercises recommended will do more harm than good. Choosing to swim to get a workout is dramatically different than choosing a workout because you swim. If you are a competitive swimmer of any age, you must avoid <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingscience.net\/2014\/02\/dryland-mistake-dips.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dryland mistakes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will leave you prone to injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><b>1. Deep Shoulder Stretches<\/b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it may sound productive to do a deep shoulder stretch to \u201cloosen up the muscles,\u201d it can cause injury. Deep shoulder stretches present themselves in a number of stretching methods. Remember this when working the shoulders: DO NOT EXTEND BEYOND NORMAL RANGE OF MOTION. If your shoulders are pulled behind you or above your head, don\u2019t do it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What to do instead: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you stretch your shoulders, try a door frame stretch.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand in a doorway or near the corner of a wall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bend your elbow 90 degrees and press your forearm into the frame or against the wall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step forward with your inside foot to feel the stretch.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold the stretch for 30 seconds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore different angles of the elbow to stretch different muscles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Replace stretching with self-myofascial releases (SMR). <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b><b>2. Bench Dips<\/b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bodybuilding.com\/exercises\/detail\/view\/name\/bench-dips\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bench dips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> kill the shoulders. The position of the bench dip is dangerous for swimmers. To complete a bench dip, you put the bench directly behind your back and grab the bench with your hands. Then, you put your feet either on the floor or on another bench. As you dip down, you bend at the elbows and engage your triceps to bring you back up. What\u2019s wrong with this move? Bench dips put unnecessary strain on the front of the shoulders when you dip down and when you thrust back up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What to do instead: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of exposing the rotator cuff to improve triceps strength, try the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shoulder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extension with the band<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"COR VID #1 - Shoulder Extension with Band\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OoDe5oyHdro?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrap the band around a post. It should be thigh high.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grab each handle and leave a little tension in the band. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pull back without lifting your shoulders. Keep your elbows straight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drive your shoulder blades back to activate the scapula. You will feel it in the middle of your scapulae.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>3. Leg Lifts<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the problem with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leg lifts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Well, leg lifts do not activate the core as many swimmers hope. Legs lifts are often performed improperly, and \u00a0two things can happen: poor core activation and increased risk of injury. When the leg lift is done poorly, the hip flexors activate instead of the core. Everyone from swimming coaches to fitness video gurus recommend V-ups, but I don\u2019t. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingscience.net\/2015\/04\/dryland-mistake-v-ups.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">V-ups can go wrong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in many ways. If a swimmer does too many V-ups, the form drags and control becomes difficult. Both lead to chronic mistakes and a lack of direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What to do instead: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try the TRX Fallout as a great alternative for building core strength and reducing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingcoretraining.com\/\">low back pain stress<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TRX Fallout\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vXES8oB5RZA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2><b>5. It leads to shoulder injuries, poor body mechanics, excessive rotations, and increased risk for lower back pain or injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What to do instead: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Replace upright rows with inverted rows, but do them the right way. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get under the bar and stabilize the body by tightening your abdominals and squeezing your glutes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pull your body weight up and keep your back straight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Row until your chest hits the bar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain control when you go down so you do not lose integrity in the back.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not round your back at the end of the row.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not use your body to thrust up and down toward and away from the bar.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>In Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, there are few truly bad exercises, just poor execution.
