﻿{"id":184709,"date":"2016-02-11T21:15:29","date_gmt":"2016-02-12T04:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=184709"},"modified":"2018-04-11T07:48:06","modified_gmt":"2018-04-11T14:48:06","slug":"2016-utah-high-school-state-championships-day-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2016-utah-high-school-state-championships-day-1\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 Utah High School State Championships: North Summit Boys, Grand County Girls Win 2A State Titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Lillian Nelson, Swimming World College Intern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At the conclusion of day one at BYU&#8217;s aquatic center, the\u00a0<strong>2A Classification<\/strong> has completed all timed finals, and <strong>North Summit High School\u00a0<\/strong>has come out on top for the men&#8217;s side with 250 points, and <strong>Grand County High School<\/strong>\u00a0takes the title among\u00a0the women with a score of 237.<\/p>\n<p>Lighting up the pool in the first event, the Women&#8217;s 200 Medley Relay, was\u00a0<strong>Grand County High School <\/strong>(<strong>Kimmerle<\/strong>, <strong>Richards<\/strong>, <strong>Richards<\/strong>, and <strong>Pierce<\/strong>)\u00a0who\u00a0shattered their entry time by over seven seconds and touched first with a time of 1:59.87.<\/p>\n<p><strong>North Summit High School&#8217;s <\/strong>team of <strong>Hellander<\/strong>, <strong>Scholes<\/strong>, <strong>Crittenden<\/strong>, and <strong>Crittenden<\/strong>\u00a0took the title in that same event with a time of\u00a01:49.41, followed by\u00a0<strong>Emery High School\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>South Summit High School<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Up next came the Men&#8217;s and Women&#8217;s 200 Freestyle, where Grand County&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Alexa Pierce\u00a0<\/strong>touched first, leading the rest of the field by over sixteen seconds, and\u00a0<strong>Braxten Pierce <\/strong>(1:51.95) out touched\u00a0<strong>McKinley Card <\/strong>(1:52.06)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in a close race up to the finish. Pierce and Card were followed by\u00a0<strong>Morgon Abbott<\/strong> who came in at\u00a02:01.82.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce made waves in the pool with another appearance in the Men&#8217;s 500 Freestyle, where he came in with a 5:18.00, winning the event.<\/p>\n<p>Swimmers who took titles in the Men&#8217;s and Women&#8217;s 200 IM were <strong>Rowland Hall High School&#8217;s\u00a0Julia Sanderson\u00a0<\/strong>(2:16.77)\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Summit Academy&#8217;s Johan Boer <\/strong>(2:10.98).<\/p>\n<p>Boer came back in the Men&#8217;s 100 Backstroke and won with a time of 57.13.<\/p>\n<p>Sanderson made another appearance at the head of the pack in the Women&#8217;s 500 Freestyle, winning the event with a time of 5:18.14.<\/p>\n<p>Telos Academy High School&#8217;s<strong> Elliot Watt\u00a0<\/strong>took two individual titles in the 50 Freestyle (21.73) and 100 Freestyle (48.32).<\/p>\n<p>The Women&#8217;s 200 Freestyle Relay was dominated by\u00a0<strong>Rowland Hall High School&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0team of\u00a0<strong>Puri<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0Hannah<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Goh<\/strong>, and<strong>\u00a0Sanderson<\/strong>\u00a0coming in at 1:51.50. The Men&#8217;s 200 Freestyle Relay was a tight race across the board, with Emery High School&#8217;s team of <strong>Gilbert<\/strong>, <strong>Guymon<\/strong>, <strong>Wright<\/strong>, and <strong>Guymon<\/strong> (1:38.56) touching first, followed by Rowland Hall (<strong>Landau<\/strong>, <strong>Fort<\/strong>, <strong>Goh<\/strong>, and <strong>Murphy<\/strong>) touching at 1:39.25 and Grand County (<strong>Hackney<\/strong>, <strong>Shumway<\/strong>, <strong>Park<\/strong>, and <strong>Pierce<\/strong>) rounding off the top three at 1:42.51.<\/p>\n<p>Other individual event winners in the 2A Classification include\u00a0<strong>Drew Roper<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(50 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke),\u00a0<strong>Alexa Pierce <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Jayden Grose\u00a0<\/strong>(100 Butterfly),\u00a0<strong>Mary Kimmerle\u00a0<\/strong>(100 Freestyle),\u00a0<strong>and Jessica Rasmussen\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Eisley Scholes\u00a0<\/strong>(100 Breaststroke).<\/p>\n<p>Grand County High School&#8217;s ladies (<strong>Pierce<\/strong>, <strong>Richards<\/strong>, <strong>Richards<\/strong>, and <strong>Kimmerle<\/strong>) took first in the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:54.50, followed by Rowland Hall&#8217;s <strong>Goh<\/strong>, <strong>Puri<\/strong>, <strong>Chamberlain<\/strong>, and <strong>Sanderson<\/strong>\u00a0(4:11.53) and Emery&#8217;s <strong>Carter<\/strong>, <strong>Oliverson<\/strong>, <strong>Celis<\/strong>, and <strong>Allinson<\/strong> (4:19.84). On the men&#8217;s side, North Summit&#8217;s team of\u00a0<strong>Scholes<\/strong>,<strong> Crittenden<\/strong>,<strong> Hellander<\/strong>,<strong> and Crittenden<\/strong> took first at 3:36.15, followed by Rowland Hall (<strong>Goh<\/strong>, <strong>Basic<\/strong>, <strong>Fort<\/strong>, and <strong>Murphy<\/strong>) at 3:38.53 and Emery (<strong>Gilbert<\/strong>, <strong>Willson<\/strong>, <strong>Stilson<\/strong>, and <strong>Guymon<\/strong>) at 3:38.82.<\/p>\n<p>Taking the pool later in the evening was the\u00a0<strong>5A Classification<\/strong>, swimming the first half of their events.<\/p>\n<p>Kicking off the session,\u00a0<strong>Cottonwood High School\u00a0<\/strong>slides into first place in the Women&#8217;s 200 Medley Relay with their team of\u00a0<strong>White<\/strong>,<strong> Price<\/strong>, <strong>Anders<\/strong>,<strong> and Dib\u00a0<\/strong>at a time of 1:50.66.
