But this week\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performance of the Week goes to a swim that, while it may have slipped under your radar, has major implications on the record book and medal predictions for this summer. Oh, and was also still really, really fast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Aquatic Super Series in Perth, Australia, Japanese breaststroker <\/span><b>Rie Kaneto <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cam-mcevoy-smokes-200-free-rie-kaneto-sets-japanese-record-in-perth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turned heads with her win in the 200 breaststroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, touching the wall in 2:20.04. That swim broke her own Japanese national record set during the supersuit era of 2009 (2:20.74) and also set an new Australian All-Comers record. <\/span><b>Kaneto <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was named Female Swimmer of the Meet after her performance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that swim, <\/span><b>Kaneto <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now sits less than a second off of the world record of 2:19.11 set by Denmark\u2019s <\/span><b>Rikke Pederson <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2013, and also moves up to become the fifth fastest performer all time in the event. <\/span><b>Kaneto\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last international medal came in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kanako-watanabe-rie-kaneto-1-2-for-japan-in-200-breast-pan-pacific-championships-results\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 at the Pan Pacific Championships, where she finished in 2:21.90 to earn a silver medal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Kaneto <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished sixth in the 200 breaststroke at Worlds last summer, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kanako-watanabe-wins-womens-200\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while her teammate <\/span><b>Kanako Wantanabe <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished first<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Kaneto\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> time from this weekend vaults her to first in the world rankings this year, which suddenly makes her the breaststroker to watch as we move toward the Olympic Games in Rio. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congratulations <\/span><b>Rie Kaneto <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for earning the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performance of the Week!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Between Cameron McEvoy\u2019s 47.56 in the 100 freestyle and Marco Koch posting a 2:07 200 breaststroke (for the second week in a row), there was no shortage of standout swims<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":58,"featured_media":47415,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"dois","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[3,41228],"tags":[27536,56891,28339,28964],"class_list":["post-184053","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","category-performance-of-the-week-videos","tag-cameron-mcevoy","tag-kanako-wantanabe","tag-marco-koch","tag-rie-kaneto"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v24.3 (Yoast SEO v24.3) -
