{"id":184020,"date":"2016-02-11T11:30:16","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T18:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=184020"},"modified":"2016-02-11T11:30:16","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T18:30:16","slug":"angela-newlon-breaks-500-free-record-start-ncac-swimming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/angela-newlon-breaks-500-free-record-start-ncac-swimming\/","title":{"rendered":"Angela Newlon Breaks 500 Free Record to Start NCAC Swimming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Cathleen Pruden, Swimming World College Intern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One pool record\u00a0and one\u00a0meet record fell and one pool record was tied in the first morning of action at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships.<\/p>\n<h2>Women&#8217;s Meet<\/h2>\n<p>In the first individual event of the morning, the 500 freestyle, DePauw&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Angela Newlon\u00a0<\/strong>(4:49.38) broke\u00a0<strong>Campbell Costley<\/strong>&#8216;s meet and pool records (4:49.85). In the following heat, Costley posted a 4:52.34, good for second. Kenyon&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marysol Arce\u00a0<\/strong>earned the third seed (4:53.59).<\/p>\n<p>The Ladies of Kenyon posted the quickest relay time this morning.\u00a0<strong>Haley Townsend<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Abby Wilson<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Caitlin Foley<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Abby Chopp\u00a0<\/strong>stopped the clock at 1:36.18. Wooster&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emma Fikse<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alex Desotelle<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jamie Hibbs<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Jillian Saccogna\u00a0<\/strong>dropped two seconds from their seed to take the second spot (1:37.74). Denison will have the third seed tonight.\u00a0<strong>Marissa Bednarek<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Marisa Pulaski<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Erin Hudson<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Ellen Higdon\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 1:38.45.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyon&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Julia Wilson\u00a0<\/strong>used an impressive breaststroke split (34.59) to propel her way to the top seed in the 200 IM (2:03.80), within striking distance of the NCAC record (2:03.06). The Big Red&#8217;s Bednarek (2:05.58) and\u00a0<strong>Halli Garza\u00a0<\/strong>(2:05.70) hold the second and third seeds.<\/p>\n<p>Denison and Kenyon\u00a0will fill eight of the nine lanes in tonight&#8217;s Championship Final. The Big Red&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mary Van Leuven\u00a0<\/strong>(23.47) and\u00a0<strong>Ashley Yearwood\u00a0<\/strong>(23.53) took the top two spots this morning. The Ladies&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Hannah Lobb\u00a0<\/strong>is seeded third (23.59).<\/p>\n<p>DePauw&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Annie Graves<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mary Woods<\/strong>, Newlon, and\u00a0<strong>Caroline Bridges\u00a0<\/strong>combined for a 3:52.39 to win the 400 medley relay this morning. Kenyon&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Delaney Ambrosen<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ellie Crawford<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Natalie Parker<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Hannah Orbach-Madel<\/strong> finished second this morning (3:52.60). Denison earned the third seed as\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Kane<\/strong>,\u00a0Pulaski, Garza, and\u00a0<strong>Kate Wright\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 3:56.76.<\/p>\n<h2>Men&#8217;s Meet<\/h2>\n<p>The Denison men dove to an early lead last night, and the momentum continued this morning. The Big Red took the top two spots in the 200 freestyle\u00a0relay.\u00a0<strong>Ryan Fleming<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Max Howes<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kenny Fox<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Conrad Wuorinen\u00a0<\/strong>swam to a top time of 1:21.54.\u00a0<strong>Victor Lowe\u00a0<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jason Wesseling<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alec Carlson<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Kevin Brinegar\u00a0<\/strong>combined for a 1:22.73. The DePauw squad of\u00a0<strong>Brandon Sholtis<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Matt Oonk<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sam Wagner<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Blake Lehmann\u00a0<\/strong>are seeded third (1:23.16).<\/p>\n<p>The Big Red men continued to impress, taking the top four seeds in the 500 freestyle.\u00a0<strong>Ben Burdick\u00a0<\/strong>lead the way (4:30.26), followed closely by\u00a0<strong>Stuart Hohm\u00a0<\/strong>(4:30.96).\u00a0<strong>Aaron Saccurato<\/strong>, another Denison sophomore finished in 4:33.08 to claim the third spot for this evening.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyon took its first top seed of the day in the 200 IM.\u00a0<strong>Matt Leenhouts\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.13), was followed closely by Denison&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jack Lindell\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.95) and\u00a0<strong>Joe Brunk\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.98), the defending NCAC Champion.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyon senior\u00a0<strong>Richard Funk\u00a0<\/strong>tied the Denison pool record (20.36) to touch first in the 50 freestyle. Teammate\u00a0<strong>Joey Duronio\u00a0<\/strong>was only .02 behind (20.38). Denison&#8217;s Fleming (20.64) will be seeded third this evening.<\/p>\n<p>In the 400 medley relay, Denison&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jason Wessleing<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jack Ball<\/strong>,\u00a0Fox, and\u00a0Wuorinen<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>combined for a top seed 3:24.68. Kenyon&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matthew Cooper<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mark Newell<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jon Zimdars<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Brooks McCoy\u00a0<\/strong>earned a second seed (3:26.17). The third seed went to DePauw.\u00a0<strong>Eli Anderson<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sam McManus<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Matthew Freudenthaler\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Wagner\u00a0<\/strong>posted
