J.R. Rosania, <i>Swimming World Magazine&#39;s<\/i> resident trainer, has six weight-room exercises that can help prevent shoulder injuries. In this clip from <i>SwimmingWorld.TV<\/i> on page 39 of the June issue of <i>Swimming World Magazine<\/i>, Rosania demonstrates the exercises, which include external and internal rotation using stretch cords, shoulder adduction, front deltoid raise, supinated shoulder raise and posterior shoulder raise.<\/p>\n<p>Each exercise also is a good way for swimmers to gain strength in their rotator cuff and back muscles. Utilizing the resistance on the weight machine or other equipment is how swimmers gain strength. Rosania suggests up to three sets of 20 repetitions in each exercise.<\/p>\n<p>Because swimming is a sport that causes stress through repetitive activity, Rosania said the supporting muscles of the specific joints need to be strengthened. The shoulder joints are the most injury-prone in a swimmer.
