THE second night of competition began at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational held at the soon-to-be location of the U.S. Olympic Trials \u2013 the Qwest Center.  <a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/swimshop\/shop_detail.asp?iPid=1460&#038;iCatId=3>Michael Phelps<\/a>, competing in the pool for the first time, put up some strong times.<\/p>\n<p>First, Phelps won the men&#39;s 100 free in 48.56, ahead of Nathan Adrian (49.00) and Joel Greenshields (49.08).  Phelps&#39; time came within a whisker of his best effort this year of 48.41 from April.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps saved his best for his second win as he posted the best time in the world in the men&#39;s 100 fly when he blazed to a 51.04.  The time eclipsed Ian Crocker&#39;s effort of 51.32 from March as the best in the world.  Masayuki Kishida placed second in 52.56, while Milorad Cavic took third in 52.76.<\/p>\n<p>Agata Korc opened the evening with a victory in the women&#39;s 100 free when she hit the wall in 55.21.  Andrea Hupman collected second in 55.53, while Margaret Hoelzer placed third in 55.55.<\/p>\n<p>After Phelps&#39; sterling 100 free, Caitlin Leverenz downed Katie Hoff, 2:26.00 to 2:29.77, in the women&#39;s 200 breast, while Yi-Ting Siow rounded out the podium with a third-place 2:32.15.  Notably, Amanda Beard was disqualified during prelims for a recovery with her elbows out of the water.  She would have been seeded fourth heading into finals.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Shanteau overtook Henrique Barbosa in the men&#39;s 200 breast, 2:12.18 to 2:12.56, even though Barbosa led 1:03.57 to 1:04.14, at the 100.  Mark Gangloff grabbed third in 2:15.18.<\/p>\n<p>Kate Ziegler picked up her second gold of the meet after winning the 1500 free last night.  Tonight, she followed that up with a time of 4:07.01 in the 400 free. Allison Schmitt touched second in 4:10.22, while Katie Carroll grabbed third in 4:13.31.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Vanderkaay took a run at his American record of 3:43.82 in the men&#39;s 400 free when he stopped the clock in 3:45.60.  Erik Vendt settled for second in 3:50.01, while Sergiy Fesenko nabbed third in 3:50.28.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Komisarz notched a strong time of 58.73 in the women&#39;s 100 fly as she downed Kate Zubkova, who placed second in 59.32.
