{"id":179560,"date":"2016-01-23T12:55:18","date_gmt":"2016-01-23T19:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=179560"},"modified":"2016-01-23T12:55:18","modified_gmt":"2016-01-23T19:55:18","slug":"indiana-downs-purdue-on-senior-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/indiana-downs-purdue-on-senior-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Indiana Downs Purdue on Senior Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Andy Ross, Swimming World Big Ten Beat Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Indiana Hoosiers proved to be too much for in-state rival Purdue as they were victorious over the Boilermakers 185.5-114.5 on the women&#8217;s side and 187-107 on the men&#8217;s side.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana Freshman <strong>Lilly King<\/strong> won the 100 and 200 breast over Purdue senior <strong>Emily Fogle<\/strong> with a 1:00.23 and 2:12.60 proving she is the one to beat for the Big Ten title. Fogle was second in the 100 at 1:01.37 and 3rd in the 200 at 2:16.56 behind Hoosier freshman <strong>Miranda Tucker<\/strong> (2:15.40).<\/p>\n<p>Indiana junior <strong>Gia Dalesandro<\/strong> and sophomore <strong>Kennedy Goss<\/strong> were also double winners for the Hoosiers. Dalesandro won the 200 fly with a spectacular last 50, coming from seventh at the 150 to first at the 200 with a 2:00.85 leading a 1-2-3 for the Hoosiers in front of <strong>Reagan Cook<\/strong> (2:01.29) and <strong>Olivia Barker<\/strong> (2:01.38). Dalesandro returned later to win the 100 fly with a 54.82.<\/p>\n<p>Goss started off her day winning the 200 free ahead of Purdue senior <strong>Allie Davis<\/strong> 1:46.42 to Davis&#8217; 1:46.52. Those two are going to be the ones to beat at Big Ten&#8217;s along with the likes of Michigan&#8217;s <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong>. Goss returned later to win the 200 back with a 1:59.82 ahead of teammate <strong>Marie Chamberlain<\/strong> (2:01.53). Last season, Goss elected to swim the 100 free at Big Ten&#8217;s over the 200 back but it looks like she will be swimming the ladder this time around. She currently sits second in the conference in that event.<\/p>\n<p>Purdue sophomore <strong>Kaersten Meitz<\/strong> also won two events as she swam a swift 1000 at 9:44.58, good for fifth in the nation. Meitz returned about an hour later to claim first in the 500 ahead of Goss with a 4:46.62 to Goss&#8217; 4:50.20. Meitz sits in second in the conference in that event behind <strong>Haley Lips<\/strong> of Indiana. Lips was third today at 4:50.80.<\/p>\n<p>Other winners on the day were Indiana&#8217;s <strong>Marie Chamberlain<\/strong> in the 100 back (55.00), <strong>Grace Vertigans<\/strong> in the 50 free (23.65), <strong>Sam Lisy<\/strong> in the 400 IM (4:19.20) and Purdue&#8217;s Davis in the 100 free (50.56)<\/p>\n<p>Indiana won the 200 medley relay with a 1:40.39 (Chamberlain, King, Dalesandro and <strong>Gabi Rajic<\/strong>). They also won the 400 free relay at 3:23.13 (Goss, Lips, Vertigans and <strong>Kaitlin Kitchens<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#8217;s side, it was Indiana junior <strong>Bob Glover<\/strong> who was the only two-event winner on the day. Glover won the 100 back with a 48.57 and the 200 with a 1:48.43. Glover leads the way in the Big Ten in both of those events.<\/p>\n<p>The marquee matchup of the day was going to be between <strong>Tanner Kurz<\/strong> of Indiana and <strong>Marat Amaltdinov<\/strong> of Purdue in the breaststroke events. Kurz won the first matchup on his senior day with a 54.27 in the 100 ahead of Amaltdinov&#8217;s 55.53. Amaltdinov came back with vengeance and never made it a contest winning the 200 at 1:59.68 ahead of Kurz&#8217;s 2:02.37.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana&#8217;s super sophomore <strong>Blake Pieroni<\/strong> won his lone individual event on the day in the 200 free with a 1:36.54. He also anchored the Hoosier&#8217;s winning 400 free relay with a stellar 43.61. He joined teammates <strong>Anze Tavcar<\/strong>, <strong>Ali Khalafalla<\/strong> and <strong>Oliver Patrouch<\/strong> on that winning relay as they touched in a 2:57.93. Khalafalla also grabbed the win in the 50 free at 19.96 and Tavcar won the 100 at 44.48.<\/p>\n<p>Other event winners on the day included Indiana&#8217;s <strong>Adam Destrampe<\/strong> in the 1000 (9:18.65), <strong>Max Irwin<\/strong> in the 200 fly (1:48.59), <strong>Jackson Miller<\/strong> in the 500 (4:27.23), <strong>Vini Lanza<\/strong> in the 100 fly (48.94) and <strong>Ian Finnerty<\/strong> in the 200 IM (1:51.28).
