Women’s 200 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

NCAP’s Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, a day after an amazing 400 free and personal best in the 100 free<\/a>, nearly posted her best January 200 free ever.<\/p>\n

Ledecky clocked a 1:56.54 to lead prelims. That’s just off her top January time of 1:56.16 set here in Austin a year ago.<\/p>\n

She will be vying to post the top January 200 free of all time tonight, currently held by Allison Schmitt with a 1:55.83 from this meet back in 2012 before she went on to claim three golds in London.<\/p>\n

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>, a day after posting a pair of U.S. Open records<\/a>, cruised into second with a time of 1:58.07. \u00a0Expect her to turn on the afterburners tonight to challenge Ledecky.<\/p>\n

Virginia’s Leah Smith<\/strong>, who had a strong 400 free overshadowed by Ledecky’s exploits last night, qualified third in the 200 with a 1:59.11.<\/p>\n

Saint Petersburg’s Melanie Margalis<\/strong> (1:59.42) and Colorado Stars’ Missy Franklin<\/strong> (1:59.65) also cleared 2:00 to make the finale.<\/p>\n

Aggie’s Sarah Henry<\/strong> (2:00.39), Athens Bulldogs’ Shannon Vreeland<\/strong> (2:00.40) and Texas’ Madisyn Cox<\/strong> (2:00.46) also made the top eight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 free<\/strong><\/p>\n
France went 1-2 in the men\u2019s 200-meter free this morning with Jeremy Stravius<\/strong> clipping his compatriot Jordan Pothain<\/strong> for the top seed, 1:49.14 to 1:49.15.<\/p>\n
The French duo will face a pretty strong field in the finale, but it is doubtful that they will challenge the top January swim of all time posted by Yannick Agnel<\/strong> with a 1:45.76 here in Austin in 2014.<\/p>\n
Texas\u2019 Townley Haas<\/strong> clocked in third with a 1:49.57 with NBAC\u2019s Michael Phelps<\/strong> still looking strong here in Austin with a fourth-seeded 1:50.06.<\/p>\n
Phelps, who set his own January personal best in the 100 fly last night<\/a>, will likely post another best in the 200 free tonight. \u00a0Phelps\u2019 fastest January swim came back in 2011 here in Austin with a 1:49.90. \u00a0He almost cleared that this morning while cruising.<\/p>\n
Queens\u2019 Dion Dreesens<\/strong> (1:50.14), Gator\u2019s Dan Wallace<\/strong> (1:50.25), Long Gutierrez<\/strong> (1:50.28) and Badger\u2019s Zane Grothe<\/strong> (1:50.60) picked up the rest of the A final spots.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 back<\/strong><\/p>\n
After taking a beating last night with what might be her first night at a pro meet without making any money, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> found a bit of speed this morning in the 200 back.<\/p>\n
Hosszu clocked a 2:08.32 to lead prelims this morning.\u00a0Depending on how she feels tonight, she might have a shot at lowering the best January 200 back ever of 2:07.31 clocked by Missy Franklin<\/strong> here in Austin in 2013.<\/p>\n
California’s Kathleen Baker<\/strong>, a star in the making, qualified second in 2:10.09 and should challenge Hosszu this evening.<\/p>\n
The third and fourth qualified swimmers certainly have the credentials to make a run at dethroning Hosszu tonight. \u00a0Franklin posted a 2:10.25 while SwimMAC’s Kirsty Coventry<\/strong> turned in a 2:10.31.<\/p>\n
Oakville’s Dominique Bouchard<\/strong> (2:10.48), Stanford’s Maya DiRado<\/strong> (2:10.61), Texas’ Quinn Carrozza<\/strong> (2:12.79) and BlueFish’s Elizabeth Beisel<\/strong> (2:12.80) also made the championship heat.<\/p>\n

Ryan Murphy<\/strong> turned in the top time of the preliminary heats with a 1:56.37. He will have some time to drop to challenge his fifth-ranked season best from last year of 1:55.00.<\/p>\n
Ryosuke Irie’s<\/strong> record for the fastest time ever in January with a 1:54.02 from the 2012 Western States meet in Australia is likely safe this evening.<\/p>\n
Jacob Pebley<\/strong> qualified second in a time of 1:57.83 with SwimMAC’s Tyler Clary<\/strong> putting up a 1:58.67 as the only other sub-2:00 swimmer this morning.<\/p>\n
NCS’s Hennessey Stuart<\/strong> qualified fourth in 2:00.18 with Tucson Ford’s Matt Grevers<\/strong> taking fifth in 2:00.19.<\/p>\n
NYAC’s Arkady Vyatchanin<\/strong> (2:00.84), NBAC’s Austin Surhoff<\/strong> (2:01.49) and Great Britain’s Jay Lelliot<\/strong> (2:02.37) all made the finale as well.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 free<\/strong><\/p>\n
SwimMAC’s Madison Kennedy<\/strong> and Canyons’ Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong> crushed prelims in the women’s 50-meter free.<\/p>\n
Kennedy led the way with a 25.03, while Weitzeil clocked a second-seeded 25.06. \u00a0Both times are just a second of the world best from last year of 24.03 set by Cate Campbell<\/strong> at the BHP Super Series in Perth. \u00a0That time also is the fastest time ever swum in January.<\/p>\n
Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>, who ranked third last year with a 24.20 at Swedish Nationals, turned in a third-seeded 25.14 this morning.<\/p>\n
SwimMAC’s Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace<\/strong> clocked a fourth-seeded 25.15, while California’s Farida Osman<\/strong> posted a 25.18 for the fifth seed.<\/p>\n
France’s Anna Santamans<\/strong> (25.20), HPCO’s Chantal van Landeghem<\/strong> (25.26) and HPCO’s Sandrine Mainville<\/strong> (25.38) also made the top eight.<\/p>\n
The B final is loaded as well with Sweden’s Therese Alshammar<\/strong> (25.42), California’s Dana Vollmer<\/strong> (25.62) and California’s Natalie Coughlin<\/strong> (25.67) all among the swimmers who made the consolation heat.<\/p>\n

NC State’s Simonas Bilis<\/strong> earned the top seed of the day in the men’s splash-and-dash with a 22.36.<\/p>\n
If he can drop another half-a-second, he might challenge the January record of 21.70 posted by Nathan Adrian<\/strong> here in Austin back in 2013.<\/p>\n
Brazil’s Bruno Fratus<\/strong>, who ranked second in the world with a 21.37 last year, qualified second today in 22.44.<\/p>\n
NYAC’s Jimmy Feigen<\/strong> posted a third-seeded 22.51, while Adrian cruised into fourth with a 22.60.<\/p>\n
Indie’s Michael Andrew<\/strong> qualified fifth in 22.73 and will be chasing his 15-16 U.S. National Age Group record of 22.34 set last year.<\/p>\n
SwimMAC’s Cullen Jones<\/strong> (22.74) and Club Wolverine’s Miguel Ortiz<\/strong> (22.81) qualified sixth and seventh.<\/p>\n
Club Wolverine’s Junya Koga<\/strong> and Trojan’s Anthony Ervin<\/strong> set up a swimoff for eighth with matching 22.82s.<\/p>\n

Although Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> definitely has some challengers in the 200 back earlier in the evening, she’s likely to walk away with the 400 IM title as\u00a0she\u00a0clocked a 4:37.50 this morning.<\/p>\n
She won’t take a run at her surprising top-ranked time\u00a0of 4:30.39 from last year, but she might post the fastest January 400 IM ever. \u00a0That record is currently owned by Aimee Willmott<\/strong> with a 4:33.64 at the 2014 Speedo Cup.<\/p>\n
NBAC’s Becca Mann<\/strong> qualified second in 4:42.50 with BlueFish’s Elizabeth Beisel<\/strong> taking third in 4:43.82.<\/p>\n

SwimMAC’s Ryan Lochte<\/strong> broke out with a big morning swim as he led the way in the men’s 400-meter IM.<\/p>\n
Lochte clocked a top time of 4:18.51 to put himself in position for the title tonight. \u00a0The record for a January swim, however, is likely out of reach as Kosuke Hagino<\/strong> clocked a 4:09.82 at the 2014 BHP Aquatic Super Series meet just two years ago.<\/p>\n
Josh Prenot<\/strong>, the 200 breast winner last night<\/a>, took second this morning in 4:19.41. \u00a0SwimMAC’s Tyler Clary<\/strong> powered his way to a third-seeded 4:19.42.<\/p>\n
NBAC’s Chase Kalisz<\/strong> (4:20.08), Nitro’s Sean Grieshop<\/strong> (4:20.89), Gator’s Dan Wallace<\/strong> (4:23.17), Andrew Seliskar<\/strong> (4:23.86) and Ous Mellouli<\/strong> (4:24.46) also made their way into the top eight.<\/p>\n
