{"id":177902,"date":"2016-01-16T14:10:38","date_gmt":"2016-01-16T21:10:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=177902"},"modified":"2016-01-16T14:10:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-16T21:10:38","slug":"virginia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia\/","title":{"rendered":"Jen Marrkand, Courtney Bartholomew Guide Virginia Past Virginia Tech, Towson; Hokie Men Win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Chandler Brandes, ACC Beat Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Virginia Tech hosted Towson and ACC rival Virginia in a two-day meet at the\u00a0Christiansburg Aquatic Center on January 15 and 16.\u00a0The Cavalier women beat Virginia Tech 258-95 and Towson\u00a0289-64, and Virginia Tech beat Towson 246-107.\u00a0On the men&#8217;s side, the Hokies beat\u00a0Virginia\u00a0212.5-140.5 and Towson 285-66, and Virginia defeated Towson 285-66.<\/p>\n<h2>Women&#8217;s Meet<\/h2>\n<p>Day one\u00a0began with the 200 free relay in which Virginia&#8217;s team of\u00a0<strong>Kasey Schmidt, Ellen Thomas, Caitlin Cooper,<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Courtney Bartholomew\u00a0<\/strong>won in 1:31.67, over three seconds ahead of runner-up Virginia Tech.\u00a0Virginia swept the top three spots in the women&#8217;s 200 IM, led by Bartholomew in 2:00.75, who later won the 200 back (1:55.61).\u00a0The Cavaliers also went 1-2-3 in the 100 free, led by\u00a0Thomas\u00a0(50.27).\u00a0Other Virginia event winners included <strong>Hanne Borgersen<\/strong>\u00a0in the 500 free (4:50.03), <strong>Laura Simon<\/strong>\u00a0in the 100 breast (1:01.55), and\u00a0<strong>Jen Marrkand<\/strong>\u00a0in the 200 fly (1:58.73), beating Virginia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Klaudia Nazieblo<\/strong>\u00a0(1:58.74) by .01. Bartholomew, Simon, Marrkand, and Thomas won\u00a0the 400 medley relay in 3:38.22 to concluded day one.<\/p>\n<p>Bartholomew, Simon, Thomas, and Cooper opened day two with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:40.09). Borgersen led Virginia&#8217;s 1-2-3 sweep in the 1000 with a time of 10:00.21, and Thomas led the sweep in the 50 free in 23.40.\u00a0Bartholomew won her third individual event of the weekend in the 100 back (53.60), followed by teammate <strong>Megan Moroney<\/strong>\u00a0(55.58) who later won the 200 free in 1:48.55. Marrkand won the\u00a0100 fly (54.85) and the 400 IM (4:22.84), her third individual win of the meet. Virginia Tech senior<strong>\u00a0Weronika Paluszek<\/strong>\u00a0touched the wall first in the 200 breast (2:13.31).\u00a0The meet concluded with Moroney,\u00a0<strong>Eryn Eddy,<\/strong> Bartholomew, and Thomas winning the 400 free relay in 3:21.56.<\/p>\n<h2>Men&#8217;s Meet<\/h2>\n<p>The men&#8217;s meet started with Virginia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lucas Bureau, Ian Ho, Brandon Fiala,<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Adam Thomas<\/strong> grabbing the men&#8217;s 200 free relay in 1:21.53.\u00a0Fiala went on to win the men&#8217;s 200 IM (1:49.94) and 100 breast (55.50), and\u00a0Bureau later won the 100 free in\u00a045.21.\u00a0Virginia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sam Magnan<\/strong> won the men&#8217;s 500 free in 4:29.79, just out touching\u00a0Virginia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michal\u00a0<\/strong><b>Scuba\u00a0<\/b>(4:29.81).\u00a0<strong>Robert Owen <\/strong>(1:47.29)\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Sean Workman<\/strong> (1:48.06) went 1-2 in the men&#8217;s 200 back for the Hokies.\u00a0Cavalier freshman\u00a0<strong>Zach Fong<\/strong> took the top spot in the 200 fly in 1:48.93.\u00a0Friday&#8217;s session ended with\u00a0Virginia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Austin Quinn, Murat Yildirim,\u00a0<\/strong>Fong, and\u00a0<strong>Nicholas Magana<\/strong> combining to win the 400 medley relay in 3:19.21.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Norbert Szabo,\u00a0<\/strong>Fiala,\u00a0<strong>Drake Becksted,<\/strong> and Ho began day two with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:30.00).\u00a0Teammates Magnan (9:22.47) and\u00a0<strong>Dan Golczewski<\/strong>\u00a0(9:24.25) went 1-2 in the 1000, and\u00a0Quinn (49.85) and\u00a0<strong>Gust Kouvaris<\/strong>\u00a0(50.36) went 1-2 in the 100 back\u00a0for the Cavaliers.\u00a0The Hokies went 1-2 in the 50 free, led by Ho in 20.49, followed by Bureau (20.79) who later went on to win the 200 free in 1:39.39.\u00a0Fiala won his third individual event of the meet, taking the top spot in the 200 breast (2:01.72). Szabo<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>won the 100 fly (49.31) and Owen placed first in the 400 IM (3:58.61) for the Hokies.\u00a0Szabo, Fiala, Ho, and Bureau won\u00a0the 400 free relay in 3:00.88 to conclude the meet.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Tech competes again on January 23 against\u00a0University of Cincinnati and Wright State.
