{"id":177857,"date":"2016-01-15T17:52:38","date_gmt":"2016-01-16T00:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=177857"},"modified":"2016-01-15T17:52:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-16T00:52:38","slug":"michael-phelps-clocks-career-best-january-sub-52-100-fly-austin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-clocks-career-best-january-sub-52-100-fly-austin\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Phelps Clocks Career Best for January With Sub-52 100 Fly in Austin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Greatest of All Time <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> bested a loaded field in the men&#8217;s 100-meter fly at the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series Austin.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps powered his way past the field with a strong back half to win the finale in 51.94. \u00a0That&#8217;s well off his top-ranked time of 50.45 from last summer&#8217;s U.S. Nationals, but is easily his best time in January in his career.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps&#8217; previous best time in January occurred in 2012 here in Austin with a 52.41.<\/p>\n<p>California&#8217;s <strong>Tom Shields<\/strong> took second overall in 52.39, off his fifth-ranked 51.03 from last summer.<\/p>\n<p>SwimMAC&#8217;s <strong>Tim Phillips<\/strong> placed third in 52.61 with Phoenix&#8217;s <strong>Giles Smith<\/strong> missing the podium with a 52.70.<\/p>\n<p>SwimMAC&#8217;s <strong>Ryan Lochte<\/strong> (52.73), SwimMAC&#8217;s <strong>Matt Josa<\/strong> (52.84), Sweden&#8217;s <strong>Simon Sjodin<\/strong> (53.31) and Singapore&#8217;s <strong>Zheng Wen Quah<\/strong> (53.33) placed fifth through eighth.<\/p>\n<p>Texas&#8217; <strong>Jack Conger<\/strong> won the B final in a time of 52.72.
