Women’s 100 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>, the reigning European Swimmer of the Year<\/a>, blasted the field with a sizzling 53.72 in the morning. \u00a0That swim would have ranked her 10th in the world last year if she hadn’t already been fourth with a 52.70 from the World Championships.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom was the lone swimmer under 54 seconds this morning, as Canyon’s Abbey Weitzel<\/strong> snared the second seed in 54.21. \u00a0Alongside Simone Manuel<\/strong>, she is one of the top American sprinters heading into this Olympic year.<\/p>\n

California’s Dana Vollmer<\/strong> checked in with a third-seeded time of 54.44, while NCAP’s Katie Ledecky<\/strong> began what will be a long weekend with seven events as she posted a 54.45 to qualify fourth.<\/p>\n

That’s a personal best for Ledecky, beating her previous top 100 free of 54.55 from last year’s Arena meet here in Austin.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> (54.58), HPCO’s Chantal Van Landeghem<\/strong> (54.86), Colorado Stars’ Missy Franklin<\/strong> (54.90) and SwimAtlanta’s Amanda Weir<\/strong> (54.96) all cleared 55 seconds to make the A final tonight.<\/p>\n

California’s Natalie Coughlin<\/strong>, who ranked 15th in the world last year, will swim in the B final with a 13th-seeded 55.54 this morning. \u00a0Jessica Hardy<\/strong>, now swimming for the Golden West Swim Club<\/a>, qualified 21st with a 56.09.<\/p>\n

France’s Jeremy Stravius<\/strong> set the top seed in the 100 free tonight with a 48.90 this morning. \u00a0He was the only swimmer to clear 49 seconds during prelims.<\/p>\n
His time is only half-a-second off his season best from last year of 48.34 from the Dubai stop of the World Cup.<\/p>\n
California’s Nathan Adrian<\/strong>, who had a top time of 48.31 last year, qualified second today in a time of 49.26 with SwimMAC star Ryan Lochte<\/strong> checking in with a third-seeded 49.55.<\/p>\n
NYAC’s Jimmy Feigen<\/strong> turned in a fourth-ranked 49.61 with Tucson Ford’s Matt Grevers<\/strong> qualifying fifth in 49.91.<\/p>\n
The Greatest of All Time Michael Phelps<\/strong> cruised into sixth in the first event of 2016 with a 49.94.<\/p>\n
Phelps had a busy day yesterday with a press conference to not only discuss his new life changes, but also to promote his new product line<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Missouri’s Michael Chadwick<\/strong> (49.96) and Canyons’ Santo Condorelli<\/strong> (49.97) both cleared 50 seconds to make the finale.<\/p>\n

That’s well off her season best of 2:23.54 from last year that ranked her 15th in the world. \u00a0But, it was enough to keep her in the center of the pool during finals tonight.<\/p>\n
Tennessee’s Molly Hannis<\/strong> turned in a second-seeded time of 2:27.93 as just the second swimmer under 2:28 this morning.<\/p>\n
NCAP’s Anna Belousova<\/strong> qualified third in 2:28.12 with Saint Petersburg’s Melanie Margalis<\/strong> earning fourth in 2:28.27.<\/p>\n
Gator’s Hilda Luthersdottir<\/strong> (2:28.32), SoFlo’s Alia Atkinson<\/strong> (2:29.18), NYAC’s Breeja Larson<\/strong> (2:29.21) and Texas A&M’s Esther Gonzalez Medina<\/strong> (2:29.77) will also compete in the A final.<\/p>\n
The biggest surprise of the morning is that last year’s fifth-ranked swimmer Micah Lawrence<\/strong> (2:22.04 at Worlds) wound up qualifying 13th with a 2:31.82 to make the B final.<\/p>\n

That would have\u00a0been the seventh-ranked time in the world last year if not for her stunning world record 55.64 from the 2015 World Championships last summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Sjostrom is playing for keeps here in Austin as the highest-profile Arena swimmer here at the company’s crown jewel series. \u00a0Look for Sjostrom to put up another sizzler during finals tonight.<\/p>\n
California’s Dana Vollmer<\/strong>, the only other swimmer ever to break 56 seconds in the event with a 55.98 from the 2012 London Olympics<\/a>, qualified second in 57.62. \u00a0That would have ranked her in the top 10 last year.<\/p>\n
California’s Noemie Thomas<\/strong> qualified third in 58.70 with Texas A&M’s Sarah Gibson<\/strong> earning fourth in 59.05.<\/p>\n
California’s Kelly Naze<\/strong> (59.35), Stanford’s Felicia Lee<\/strong> (59.79), SoFlo’s Claire Donahue<\/strong> (59.89) and California’s Farida Osman<\/strong> (59.97) made up the rest of the top eight headed to the A final.<\/p>\n

Lochte clocked in a 52.58, just ahead of butterfly specialist Giles Smith<\/strong> of Phoenix Swim Club. Smith posted a second-seeded time of 52.63.<\/p>\n
California’s Tom Shields<\/strong>, who ranked fifth in the world last year with a 51.03, posted a third-seeded 52.65.<\/p>\n
SwimMAC’s Tim Phillips<\/strong> claimed fourth in 52.91, while NBAC’s Michael Phelps<\/strong> qualified fifth overall in 52.99.<\/p>\n
SwimMAC’s Matt Josa<\/strong> (53.18), Sweden’s Simon Sjodin<\/strong> (53.20) and Singapore’s Zheng Wen Quah<\/strong> (53.23) also made the finale.<\/p>\n

NCAP’s Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, fresh off a personal best in the 100-meter free to start the day, scorched the pool in the middle distance women’s 400-meter freestyle at the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series Austin.<\/p>\n
Ledecky blew the doors off the rest of the field with a 4:01.45 in January, in prelims. \u00a0That swim ties for 14th all time in the event’s history and is the second-fastest time in January ever behind Ledecky’s 4:00.47 from last year’s Austin stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series.<\/p>\n
Considering that Ledecky is coming off altitude training in Colorado Springs, it is not unfathomable that she could become the first woman\u00a0in history to drop a 3:59 January 400-meter freestyle time.<\/p>\n
Virginia’s Leah Smith<\/strong> was the closest qualifier with a second-seeded 4:06.06, while Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> qualified third in 4:06.58.<\/p>\n
NBAC’s Lotte Friis<\/strong> (4:07.95), Mission Viejo’s Stephanie Peacock<\/strong> (4:07.98), NBAC’s Becca Mann<\/strong> (4:08.17), Aggie’s Sarah Henry<\/strong> (4:11.37) and NBAC’s Cierra Runge<\/strong> (4:11.57) also made the championship heat tonight.<\/p>\n
