<\/p>\nSTANFORD, California, April 5. THE second night of swimming at the USA Swimming Grand Prix held in Stanford provided plenty of pool records, while Natalie Coughlin and Klete Keller posted some swift swims.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 IM<\/b>
\nAfter shaking off some of the first-day preliminary cobwebs, Natalie Coughlin is on point at this meet. Last night, she torched the consolation heat with a 53.94 during the 100 free B final. Tonight, she blistered the shorter medley with a fantastic 2:10.88. She became just the third American swimmer under 2:11 as she joined Katie Hoff (2:10.08) and Whitney Myers (2:10.11). She also moved into the top 10 all time in the event.<\/p>\n
Ariana Kukors finished a distant second with a time of 2:13.71, while Julia Smit placed third in 2:13.99.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 IM<\/b>
\nVanni Mangoni eased through the championship heat with a winning readout of 2:02.26. He knocked off second-place finisher John Dorr (2:04.39) by more than two seconds. Nate Cass completed the top three with a time of 2:04.89.<\/p>\n
Women's 400 free<\/b>
\nAlyssa Anderson of the Sierra Marlins nearly claimed the pool record with a winning time of 4:12.38. She came up just short of Kate Ziegler's 4:12.06 set in 2004.<\/p>\n
Susana Escobar placed second with a time of 4:13.06, while Haley Anderson hit the wall third in 4:15.56.<\/p>\n
Men's 400 free<\/b>
\nAmerican-record holder Klete Keller put together a fine swim to win the middle distance event with a time of 3:45.28. The time destroyed Michael Phelps' 2005 pool record of 3:51.94, but came up a second short of his American record of 3:44.11 and U.S. Open record of 3:44.19.<\/p>\n
Keller also improved upon his season-best effort of 3:47.04 from the Missouri Grand Prix in February.<\/p>\n
Andy Grant touched out Luis Escobar for second, 3:59.57 to 3:59.73, as the duo completed the top three, which were the only sub-4:00 times of the race.<\/p>\n
Women's 100 breast<\/b>
\nTara Kirk won a head-to-head battle with some top American breaststrokers like Megan Jendrick and Keri Hehn as Kirk just missed Leisel Jones' pool record of 1:07.27. Kirk clocked a time of 1:07.33, coming up a bit short of her season-best time of 1:06.66 from the Missouri Grand Prix.<\/p>\n
Jendrick settled for second with a time of 1:08.18, while Hehn took third in 1:08.89.<\/p>\n
In the consolation heat, Tatiane Sakemi took 10th overall with a time of 1:11.21 to set the South American record in the event.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 breast<\/b>
\nAnother pool record withstood a run as Henrique Barbosa surfaced from a hotly-contested final with a time of 1:02.32. Brenton Rickard's facility standard of 1:02.15 stood up, however.<\/p>\n
John Criste placed second in 1:02.72, while Damar Dugonjic finished third in 1:02.18.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 back<\/b>
\nAriana Kukors, after taking second to Natalie Coughlin in the 200 IM, stepped up during the 200 back when she clocked a time of 2:15.70 in the dorsal event.<\/p>\n
Julia Smit snared second place with a time of 2:16.61, while Meghan Leddy touched third in 2:16.94.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 back<\/b>
\nEugene Godsoe cruised in the event to win with a time of 2:02.55, while Hongzhe Sun (2:04.26) and James Martin (2:05.71) comprised the rest of the top three.<\/p>\n
Women's 50 free<\/b>
\nFlavia Delaroli-Cazziolato nipped the pool record of Cate Campbell (25.57), and took a run at Rebeca Gusmao's Brazilian record of 25.17 when she won the sprint in 25.51.<\/p>\n
Amanda Weir won a close battle for second with a time of 25.64, while Madison Kennedy (25.67) and Karlee Bispo (25.69) finished third and fourth.<\/p>\n
Men's 50 free<\/b>
\nThe Brazilians reigned in the sprints as Nicholas Santos won the men's splash-and-dash with a time of 22.48. Gabe Woodward placed second in 22.67, while William Copeland took third in 22.82.<\/p>\n
Other big names swam in the heat as Jason Lezak (4th\/22.84) and Nick Brunelli (7th\/22.95) missed the top three.<\/p>\n
Relays<\/b>
\nA Brazilian team of Tatiana Barbosa, Monique Ferreira, Manuela Lyrio and Joanna Maranhao won a head-to-head battle with Bearcat teammates Crystal Kibby, Amber Boucher, Sammi Mischkot and Tori Simenec, 8:13.90 to 9:00.68, as the two were the only squads in the women's 800 free relay.<\/p>\n
Men's relay results not available at press time.<\/p>\n
