﻿{"id":177142,"date":"2016-01-16T18:41:48","date_gmt":"2016-01-17T01:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=177142"},"modified":"2016-01-16T18:41:48","modified_gmt":"2016-01-17T01:41:48","slug":"stevens-v-jhu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/stevens-v-jhu\/","title":{"rendered":"Evan Holder, Anna Wisniewski Help JHU Beat Stevens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Cathleen Pruden, Swimming World College Intern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Johns Hopkins men and women Blue Jays defeated the Stevens Institute\u00a0Ducks on Saturday.<\/p>\n<h2>Men&#8217;s Meet:<\/h2>\n<p>The Blue Jays are ranked sixth in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tyr-cscaa-ncaa-division-ii-division-iii-rankings-released\/\" target=\"_blank\">CSCAA&#8217;s latest poll<\/a>, ahead of Stevens (11th). The Blue Jays scored 151 points to the Duck&#8217;s 103.<\/p>\n<p>Evan Holder\u00a0lead the way, posting three individual wins for JHU. Holder was a part of JHU&#8217;s winning 200 medley relay. He was joined by teammates\u00a0<strong>Darren Loh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mark Wilson<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Michael Ashmead<\/strong> as the quartet posted a time of 1:34.50. Stevens&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Ravi Sun<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Joshua Lefeber<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Austen Young<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Tommy Wolinski<\/strong> were only .07 seconds behind.<\/p>\n<p>Holder dominated the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a 56.92. His teammate,\u00a0<strong>Scott Sterrett\u00a0<\/strong>was second (59.46), just ahead of Stevens&#8217;\u00a0Lefeber (59.68).<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 freestyle, Holder lead a JHU sweep with his time of 46.53. Ashmead swam a 47.55 and\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Bauchwitz\u00a0<\/strong>was third (48.43).<\/p>\n<p>Holder&#8217;s 100 butterfly margin of victory was slimmer, finishing in a time of (51.37) while Young touched in a 51.57.\u00a0<strong>Vinny Tavoletti\u00a0<\/strong>was third (52.76).<\/p>\n<p>Sun was dominant for the Ducks, despite the team&#8217;s loss. The senior won the 100 and 200 backstrokes and the 200 IM. In the 100 backstroke, Sun posted a time of 52.19. JHU&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emile Kuyl\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Jan Hagemeister\u00a0<\/strong>were second (52.36) and third (52.37). In the 200 backstroke, Sun raced to a 1:54.64. JHU took second and third as\u00a0Loh and\u00a0<strong>Patrick Flynn\u00a0<\/strong>posted times of 1:55.63 and 1:57.49.<\/p>\n<p>Sun&#8217;s 200 IM time of 1:55.90 was just ahead of two JHU swimmers. Wilson and Kuyl placed second and third (1:56.92 and 1:58.04).<\/p>\n<p>JHU won every other event in the afternoon.\u00a0<strong>Andrew Greenhalgh\u00a0<\/strong>won\u00a0the 1000 by nearly 30 seconds. His time of 9:29.38 lead a JHU sweep as\u00a0<strong>Billy Gravely<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Erik Bostrom\u00a0<\/strong>touched in 9:54.21 and 9:57.68. Greenhalgh also won the 500 freestyle (4:38.50). Teammate\u00a0<strong>Kyle Otazu\u00a0<\/strong>was second (4:41.72) and Stevens&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Connor Harrigan\u00a0<\/strong>finished third (4:54.39).<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Jays also swept the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly. In the 200 freestyle\u00a0Otazu,\u00a0<strong>John Chu<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Davis Knox\u00a0<\/strong>raced to times of 1:42.38, 1:44.22, and 1:46.76. In the 200 butterfly, Wilson lead the way (1:53.98).\u00a0<strong>Michael Wohl\u00a0<\/strong>was not far behind in a 1:54.95.\u00a0<strong>Austin Wilson\u00a0<\/strong>touched third (2:00.89).<\/p>\n<p>Ashmead earned an individual win, finishing the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.45. Teammate\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Bauchwitz\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 21.95 for second place. Stevens&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Tommy Wolinski\u00a0<\/strong>touched third (22.03).<\/p>\n<p>In the 200 breaststroke, JHU&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Scott Sterrett\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Colby Yu\u00a0<\/strong>finished 1-2 in times of 2:07.98 and 2:14.04. The Ducks&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Alex Chen\u00a0<\/strong>was third (2:15.27).<\/p>\n<p>JHU&#8217;s Ashmead, Bauchwitz, Otazu, and Wohl won the 400 freestyle relay, stopping the clock in 3:08.78.<\/p>\n<h2>Women&#8217;s Meet:<\/h2>\n<p>The fifth ranked Johns Hopkins women topped the 16th ranked Stevens team by a score of 157-97. The Blue Jays saw multiple swimmers post multiple wins on the afternoon and the team did not lose a single event.<\/p>\n<p>The JHU women got off to a quick start as the team of\u00a0<strong>Shirley Chan<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gwynnie LaMastra<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Anna Wisniewski<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Lena Bless\u00a0<\/strong>posted a top time of 1:49.68 in the 200 medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>JHU&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Courtney Cowan\u00a0<\/strong>claimed the 1,000 freestyle (10:42.33) nearly 30 seconds ahead of\u00a0Stevens&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Heinbach\u00a0<\/strong>(11:07.41).\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Duncan\u00a0<\/strong>(11:28.00) finished third.<\/p>\n<p>Cowan also went on to win the 500 in a time of 5:13.61. Her teammate\u00a0<strong>Rabia Syed\u00a0<\/strong>touched second (5:22.84) while Heinbach was third (5:26.40).<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Jays&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Kaitlin Jones\u00a0<\/strong>dominated the 200 freestyle, stopping the clock in a time of 1:56.62. The race for second was close, as\u00a0<strong>Lindsay Kriz\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.45) out touched the Ducks&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Courtney Jones\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.66).<\/p>\n<p>JHU&#8217;s Jones also topped the 50 freestyle and the 200 breaststroke. In the 50, she touched the wall in 24.98 seconds. Her teammate Bless was second (25.79). Stevens&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Jenn Rutledge\u00a0<\/strong>finished third (26.96).<\/p>\n<p>In the 200 breaststroke. Jones won with a 2:25.97, over three\u00a0seconds before teammate\u00a0<strong>Sara Wujciak\u00a0<\/strong>(2:29.00). Stevens&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Kate Prescott\u00a0<\/strong>rounded out the top three (2:34.92).<\/p>\n<p>JHU&#8217;s dominance continued as Wisniewski lead a sweep of the 100 backstroke. She stopped the clock at 59.28, ahead of teammates\u00a0<strong>Kristen Kaiser\u00a0<\/strong>(1:03.47) and\u00a0<strong>Ariana Waitkavicz\u00a0<\/strong>(1:04.36). The Blue Jay also topped the 200 backstroke (2:08.74). She was well ahead of Kaiser (2:15.11) and\u00a0<strong>Sarah Hoogenboom\u00a0<\/strong>(2:16.90).<\/p>\n<p>Wisniewski&#8217;s final victory of the day came in the 200 IM (2:08.85), where she was twelve seconds ahead of the next swimmer.\u00a0<strong>Katlyn Christenson\u00a0<\/strong>(2:20.46) was second and\u00a0<strong>Tori Glascock\u00a0<\/strong>was third (2:22.92).<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Jays&#8217;\u00a0LaMastra won two individual events of her own. In the 100 breaststroke, she stopped the clock in 1:06.13. Wujciak finished in a 1:09.41. Stevens&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Elena Piper\u00a0<\/strong>touched third (1:12.56).<\/p>\n<p>LaMastra claimed the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.44. Bless touched second (55.62).\u00a0The Ducks&#8217; Jones placed third (55.65).<\/p>\n<p>In the 200\u00a0butterfly,\u00a0<strong>Abigail Brown\u00a0<\/strong>stopped the clock in a 2:08.39, just before her teammate Chan (2:08.81). Heinbach was third (2:15.49).
