ELEANOR Roosevelt's women's team avenged a defeat to Severna Park at last year's Maryland 4A3A Championships, winning the first-ever team title in the program's history.

Eleanor Roosevelt raked in 273 points en route to claiming the women's title. A tight battle ensued for second place, as three teams finished within 6.5 points of each other. The defending champion Severna Park women took second with 249 points while South River came in third with 244 points. Notably, Urbana, the 1-3A champions from last year, finished fourth (242.5).

Severna Park kicked off the meet with a state record in the 200 medley relay. Melissa Cropper, Valerie Cosgrove, Sarah Lloyd and Emily Lloyd teamed up, clocking a 1:54.17 time, which erased the 2007 record of 1:56.17 set by Leonardtown. Severna Park's foursome of Cosgrove, Mary Miller, Katherine Kline and Sarah Lloyd touched out Eleanor Roosevelt in the 200 freestyle relay with a winning time of 1:45.43.

Sarah Lloyd snared two state records in each of her individual event victories. Lloyd bettered Katelyn Rossick of Middletown's 200 IM record, which Rossick set in a 2:09.88 the day before, with a 2:09.15 time. Lloyd reset her own 100 butterfly record, stopping the clock at 56.61. Lloyd set the former record (58.36) at last year's state meet.

Emily Lloyd also picked up two individual wins. Lloyd destroyed the state record in the 50 freestyle with a 23.86 time. Samantha Durham of Walkersville set the former mark of 25.25 the day prior at the 1-3A meet. Lloyd fell short of her 2007 record in the 100 freestyle (51.97), but she picked up the top spot in the event nonetheless with a 52.54 time.

Hannah Betman of Eleanor Roosevelt led the Raider women with two individual event triumphs. Betman outswam the competition in the 200 freestyle (2:02.15) and the 500 freestyle (5:19.86).

By Brian Savard COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, April 2.
