FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 29. STANFORD's Paul Kornfeld matched his 100 breaststroke hardware with a gold medal in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships.<\/p>\n

Kornfeld became the fifth-fastest swimmer of all time in the event when he touched the wall in 1:53.11. That performance put him behind Mike Alexandrov (1:52.93) and in front of Scott Spann (1:53.17). The 1:53.11 also ties a readout from Brendan Hansen for eighth-fastest time ever.<\/p>\n

Kornfeld became the first breaststroker to sweep the events since California's Henrique Barbosa won the 100 (52.52) and 200 (1:53.97) in 2006.<\/p>\n

The win also gave Stanford its NCAA-record 13th title in the event as Kornfeld became the first Cardinal to win since Tom Wilkens did so in 1998 with a 1:55.02.<\/p>\n

"It feels great," Kornfeld said. "It was my best event growing up and last year I had a breakthrough in the 100 [yard event]. I was a little more confident in the 100 coming into this meet but it also feels great to come in and do what I could in the 200 breast. I wanted to come out strong and be in the lead at the 100 and turn it on with about 60 to go building into that last 50. I think that's what I did and it turned out well." <\/p>\n

Spann placed second with a time of 1:54.16, while California's Sean Mahoney took third in 1:54.65.<\/p>\n

In the team battle, Arizona remained in the lead by 107.6 points, 460.5 to 353, over Texas. Meanwhile, California (300.5), Stanford (298) and Auburn (248) comprised the rest of the top five.<\/p>\n
