In reality, even the fastest swimmers have technique limitations, but they offset them with strength and conditioning. The purpose of this series of articles is to address scientifically the technique misconceptions that have become “conventional wisdom,” and to present options that are more effective.

It is a common technique misconception that it is effective for a swimmer to complete the arm entry parallel to the water surface in freestyle and backstroke, while in butterfly completing the entry with the hands above the shoulders. The idea is that a downward angle on the arm entry generates more resistance, however Dr. Havriluk has found that these typical arm entries result in wasted time.

Check out this month’s issue of Swimming World Magazine to read more about arm entry and Dr. Havriluk’s findings on more efficient arm entries.

Dr. Rod Havriluk is a sports scientist and consultant who specializes in swimming technique instruction and analysis.
