While the rest of the Southeastern Conference has yet to compete in the new year, Florida got off to a fast start in Gainesville. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Gator men and women both won against in-state rival Florida State, an Atlantic Coast Conference team. The fourth ranked Florida men won 188-109 over the 23rd ranked Seminole men. The Gator women, ranked 14th, dominated Florida State 200-93.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Beating a rival is always exciting and good for the fans, but from a coaching standpoint we took this win ultimately as an opportunity to see where we’re at and what we need to improve on as we approach the postseason,” Florida Assistant Head\u00a0Coach\u00a0Martin Wilby\u00a0<\/strong>said in a press release.<\/p>\n

Caeleb Dressel <\/b>continued his strong season with a big day, even though he did not swim his normal events. Dressel took second in the 100-meter backstroke and won the 100-meter butterfly. He was also a member of the Gators winning 400-meter freestyle relay team. <\/span><\/p>\n

Florida won the 400-meter medley and 400-meter freestyle relays on both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s side. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Seminoles only won seven events in the entire meet. The Gators? They won 25.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s always hard when you come back after break so tonight was a good evaluation point and we were able to evaluate everyone tonight so it was a good opportunity,” Wilby said in the press release.<\/p>\n

The Gators are back in action Jan. 23 in a SEC dual meet against the Auburn Tigers. The Tiger men are currently ranked eighth, and the women are ranked 10th.<\/p>\n

“We’ll be back for Auburn and the SEC Championships in just a few weeks here so they’re ready to be back in the swing of things,” Wilby said in the press release.<\/p>\n

Auburn will be the next SEC team to compete. The Tigers will take on a powerhouse Texas team on Jan. 7.<\/p>\n

Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, South Carolina and Texas A&M will compete next weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n
