He was 21 years old. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramsden swam for the Dartmouth team and was from Nashville, Tennessee. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the sheriff\u2019s office incident report, Ramsden swam about 4,000 yards before trying to complete a 100-yard swim without breathing. His cousin and sister notice a \u201clack of movement\u201d and alerted lifeguards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ramsden was given CPR but was ultimately pronounced dead on the scene.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dartmouth President <strong>Phil Hanlon<\/strong> released a statement on the incident: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To the Dartmouth community,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of the death of Tate Ramsden, a member of the Class of 2017, who died yesterday while swimming in Sarasota, Fla., where he was on holiday with family members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have been in touch with Tate\u2019s family to share our deepest sympathies with them at this time of heartbreaking loss. Tate was a member of the men\u2019s swimming and diving team and a brother in Beta Alpha Omega fraternity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tate\u2019s family is planning a memorial service, which will take place next weekend in his hometown of Nashville, Tenn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I urge students, faculty, and staff who would like to speak to a counselor on their own behalf or out of concern for someone else to contact our Safety and Security office at (603) 646-4000 at any hour.
