LAUSANNE, Switzerland, February 21. ACCORDING to a release distributed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Singapore has won its bid to host the first Summer Youth Olympic Games to be held in 2010. Singapore won the final vote tally, 53-44, over Moscow as the initial host city of the event.<\/p>\n
"This is a key moment for the Olympic Movement," IOC President Jacques Rogge said in the release. "Singapore has put together a very exciting project. Hosting the Youth Olympic Games for the first time is a great responsibility, and I have every confidence in the team in Singapore. I have no doubt that their professionalism and enthusiasm will be instrumental in the staging of successful Youth Olympic Games in 2010.<\/p>\n
"The Youth Olympic Games are the flagship of the IOC's determination to reach out to young people," Rogge continued. "These Games will not only be about competition. They will also be the platform through which youngsters will learn about Olympic values and the benefits of sport, and share their experiences with other communities around the globe. We are looking forward to joining in the celebration in Singapore in 2010."<\/p>\n
According to the release, the Games will bring together athletes, ages 14-18, to participate in the same sports program as seen in the Olympic Games. While competition will be key at the event, each Youth Olympic Games will provide educational programs on Olympic values, benefits of sport and dangers of doping as part of the experience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
