BUFFALO, New York, February 17. THE University of Massachusetts men and Fordham University women are atop of the leaderboard after the first day of competition at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships, held at the Flickinger Center.<\/p>\n
The Minutemen sit atop the men's standings with 149 points after three events, followed by St. Bonaventure University (87) and Duquesne (74). Rounding out the scoring is Saint Louis (72), La Salle (72), Fordham (64), Xavier (58) and George Washington (48).<\/p>\n
The Fordham Rams hold the lead on the women's side with 80 points after two events. They are followed by St. Bonaventure (58), and Duquesne, UMass and La Salle all tied for third with 56 points. Rounding out the women's scoring is Xavier (52), Rhode Island (50), George Washington (42), Saint Louis (38) and Richmond (34).<\/p>\n
In the women's 200-yard medley relay action Fordham took first. The team of freshman Brienne Ryan, sophomore Kelly Bunster, and seniors Nicole Marshall and Tressa Dunn touched the wall with a combined time of 1:40.89.<\/p>\n
For the men's 200-yard medley relay, Massachusetts' squad of freshman Pete Sacco, juniors Max Butler and Chris Howard, and senior Juan Moliere earned first place in the event with a time of 1:30.58.<\/p>\n
UMass dominated the men's 1-meter dive with sophomore Jason Cook and junior John Clark taking first and second place, consecutively. Cook earned a score of 333.05 while Clark scored 283.35.<\/p>\n
Fordham turned in a conference record with a time of 7.20.82 in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Dunn, Bunster, Ryan and senior Caitlin Napoli teamed up to break the record of 7:24.25 set by Fordham in 2009. This time also set the Flickinger Center Pool record.<\/p>\n
In the final event of the day, Duquesne took hold of first place in the men's 800-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Roman Becicka, juniors Jim O'Hara and Edward LaBlanc, and senior Chris Kobela notched a combined time of 6:40.84.<\/p>\n
The Championships continue Thursday morning with trials at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
