NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, February 15. CENTRAL Connecticut furthered distanced itself from competition on day two at the Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, which are being held in Kiphuth Pool at Yale University. The Blue Devils, who won the meets first six events on day one, collected six of seven titles. Seniors Rachel Brookman and Lindsey Snyder, who both had record-setting performances in the preliminaries, were individual winners. Fellow senior Kristen Jurzynski and junior Erin Crowley also won, while the CCSU 200 medley and 800 free relay teams were victorious.<\/p>\n
Snyder, freshman Alyssa Reinhard, Brookman and Crowley teamed up to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.76. It was the fifth consecutive 200 medley relay title for CCSU. Jurzynski then made it eight straight Blue Devil victories with a 4:29.84 effort in the 400 IM. Sophomore Alex Huffman and junior Heather Vendetta also swam in the 400 IM finals. Huffman placed fourth with a 4:41.32 time. Vendetta, swimming in her first career NEC final, touched in at 4:47.98 to earn sixth place honors.<\/p>\n
Brookman continued the Blue Devil streak, winning the 100 fly in 55.98. Earlier in day, Brookman established a new Kiphuth Pool record in preliminary action. She posted a 55.49 effort, shaving .57 seconds off the previous best set by Yale's Jennifer Renzi on Feb. 19, 1993. Brookman's time also established CCSU and NEC records. Megan McGorry added a top-five finish for CCSU. The freshman touched in at 59.48 to take fifth.<\/p>\n
Central Connecticut won its 10th straight event and stretched its lead to 134 points with a Crowley victory in the 200 free. After swimming a personal-best 1:52.15 in the prelims, Crowley went 1:52.31 in the finals. Sophomore Kandra Kane also went to the podium in the 200 free, placing third in 1:57.30. Freshman Alyssa Carlucci was sixth at 1:59.56.<\/p>\n
Wagner freshman Bethny Brown ended the CCSU run at perfection. She won the 100 breast in 1:08.52. Carlucci, who had the sixth best preliminary time, came in second with a 1:09.81 performance.<\/p>\n
Snyder won the 100 back in 57.39, adding a mere .37 seconds to her record-setting preliminary time. The Winterport, ME native bested Gardner Webb's Whitney Hooley, who swam a 57.61 in 2006, previous record time. Senior Maya Drew, meanwhile, came in fifth with a 1:02.93 effort. <\/p>\n
Crowley, Snyder, Jurzynski and McGorry closed out the evening with a victory in the 800 free relay. The quartet completed the swim in 7:36.98.<\/p>\n
Jurzynski, Brookman and Snyder all repeated as winners in the evening's respective events. Jurzynski and Brookman won the 400 IM and 100 fly last year, while Snyder was a winner in the 100 back last season and in 2005. With her seventh victory, Snyder has inched into a third place tie with Juliana DiPlacido on the all-time CCSU list for NEC wins. Jurzynski now has five career wins at the NECs, while Brookman is at three.<\/p>\n
