INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, February 13. FIVE events are in the books after the first day of competition at the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference swimming and diving championships, held at Ruth Lilly Center Pool. The Greyhounds teams are each in third place in their respective standings in the very early going.<\/p>\n
Wayne State took the women's 200 medley relay in an NCAA A-cut time (1:47.52). The Greyhound foursome of Erica Smith, Isabela Tafur, Valerie Crosby and Casey Owen took third in the event with a 1:48.30 time, nearly a full second off their effort in the preliminaries. The women's 1650 freestyle went to WSU's Ashley St. Andrew, who etched an A-cut time along with UIndy senior Ellie Miller (pictured), who finished runner-up with a 17:25.11 clocking.<\/p>\n
On the men's side, Grand Valley State (1:32.38) was victorious in the 200 medley relay, finishing just ahead of Wayne State (1:32.54), each of whom punched thier ticket to the national meet with qualifying times. The Greyhounds took fifth in the event. In the 1650 freestyle, freshman Kevin Coates of Lewis established a new GLIAC record in the race, touching in 15:43.39. UIndy's Baris Ilhan and Alican Alicli earned NCAA B-cut times in finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. <\/p>\n
The men's 3-meter dive was contested Wednesday and Wayne State's Cayce Bolt was crowned the champion with a 457.55 total.<\/p>\n
By virtue of both wins on the women's side, WSU holds a substantial lead through day one, leading runner-up GVSU by a 114-56 count. UIndy sits in third with 49 points through two events.<\/p>\n
The men's race shows GVSU on top with 93 day-one points with Lewis (82) and UIndy (75) close behind. Thursday's action includes the 200 free relay, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 400 medley relay and women's 1-meter dive. Preliminaries are set for 10:30 a.m. with the finals at 6:00 p.m.<\/p>\n
