WIDENER&#39;s men&#39;s swimming team won its 11th Middle Atlantic Conference title, including its fourth straight, and freshman Joe Deighan (Wyomissing, PA) was named the men&#39;s Rookie of the Meet at the Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA.<\/p>\n<p>The 2009 class is just the second in the program&#39;s history to win four MAC titles, joining the class of 1999. The 11 championships have come within a 16-year span and it is the Pride&#39;s sixth this decade.<\/p>\n<p>Deighan went on a tear by taking the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:55.23, closing second in the 200-yard IM in a school-record 1:55.53 and third in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.76 seconds. He was on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team (7:08.87) that also consisted of junior Matt Slomiany (Lansdale, PA), Dalton Schiller (Media, PA) and fellow sophomore Jesse Bregman (Oreland, PA).<\/p>\n<p>Deighan was on the third-place 400-yard medley relay that finished in 3:37.69 also was made up of Slomiany, Bregman and freshman Jeff Colarusso (Hanover Township, PA). He also was on the 400-yard freestyle relay team that ended in 3:12.90 and was comprised of Bregman, senior Shawn McDevitt (Drexel Hill, PA) and freshman Jordan Mulligan (Dingmans Ferry, PA).<\/p>\n<p>Slomianywonthe 400-yard IM in 4:15.94, was second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:14.47 and third in the 200-yard IM in 1:58.80.<\/p>\n<p>The men&#39;s 200-yard freestyle relay team was second in 1:27.90 and was made up of Bregman, McDevitt, Mulligan and sophomore Greg Golden (Vineland, NJ).<\/p>\n<p>McDevitt grabbed second in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes, Charlie Schindler (Pasadena, MD) took second in the 400-yard IM, fellow freshman Sean Corcoran (Newtown, PA) was second in the 100-yard breaststroke and Bregman took second in the 100-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Among the men&#39;s third-place finishers included the 200-yard medley relay team that consisted of McDevitt, Mulligan, sophomore Steve Goss (Allentown, PA) and junior Matt Rhoads (Glenolden, PA).<\/p>\n<p>The men&#39;s bronze medal winners also included Schiller in the 400-yard IM, Bregman in the 200-yard freestyle, Goss in the 100-yard breaststroke and Corcoran in the 200-yard breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>The men cruised to victory with 807 points to best chief-rival Albright, which ended second with 637.5 points. Bob Piotti, in his 22nd year as head coach, was named MAC Coach of the Year for the ninth time.<\/p>\n<p>For the women, the 200-yard medley relay team ended second in 1:54.44. The squad was comprised of juniors Tyla Conicello (West Conshohocken, PA), Emma Thrasher (Gettysburg, PA) and Elin Berlin (Wayne, PA), and freshman Carlee Moir (Broomall, PA).<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Molly Bendzyn (Cherry Hill, NJ), last year&#39;s Women&#39;s Rookie of the Meet, closed second in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:16.39. The 400-yard freestyle relay team was third in 3:47.76 and was made up of Conicello, Berlin, Thrasher and Moir.<\/p>\n<p>Berlin also broke two school records, closing third in the in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:32.46 and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.11.<\/p>\n<p>The Misericordia University women&#39;s swim capped off a spectacular weekend by winning the 2009 MAC Championship, Sunday at the Wilkes-Barre CYC.<\/p>\n<p>Abby Kocon won the 100 free and was part of the winning 400 free relay team as the Cougars amassed 676 points.<\/p>\n<p>Kocon set a school record in the 100 free (54.86) to edge teammate Alicia Bryk (55.20).<\/p>\n<p>Kocon and Bryk teamed with Amanda McHugh and Alaina Trent to set another school record to win the 400 free relay (3:42.25).<\/p>\n<p>MU&#39;s Jessica Grant was named the MAC&#39;s female Rookie of the Year after an impressive runner-up finish in the 1650 free (18:53.22).<\/p>\n<p>McHugh finished fourth (2:33.73) to lead six Cougars on the podium in the 200 breaststroke. Jessie Williamson and Megan McChesney finished sixth and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Crissy Condus (2:21.51) and Michelle Lacroce (2:30.53) finished third and sixth, respectively, in the 200 butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea Mixon added an eighth place finish in the 100 free.<\/p>\n<p>MU head coach Jason Morini was named MAC Women&#39;s Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>For the men, Jeff Clark set a school and CYC pool record to win the 200 breaststroke (2:11.26) while leading the Cougars to a third place finish.<\/p>\n<p>Mitch Finch was third in the 200 back and Robbie Jacobs was third in the 100 free.<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs, Finch, Greg Vossler and Brendan Dougherty set a school record during a third place finish in the 400 free relay (3:16.09).<\/p>\n<p>Mike Dougherty (200 back), Vossler (100 free) and Kyle Geier (200 fly) all recorded fifth place finishes while Nick Cannizzaro was sixth in the 1650 free.<\/p>\n<p>Brendan Dougherty was eighth in the 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p><i>Special thanks to Middle Atlantic Conference for contributing this report.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WILKES-BARRE, Pennsylvania, February 16.
