WESTMINSTER, Maryland, February 9. SENIOR Megan Morse (Easton, MD\/Sts. Peter & Paul) and sophomore Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA\/Phoenixville Area) each won two individual events as the Washington College swim team improved to 11-1 overall and 5-1 in Centennial Conference meets with a 69-26 victory over host McDaniel College this afternoon. The Washington College men were victorious in their dual as well, winning by a score of 67-28. Washington's 200 medley relay team broke the pool record during
\nthe meet. The Shoremen improved to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in conference meets
\nwith the win.<\/p>\n
Morse won the 50 freestyle in a Washington College season-best time of
\n25.19, moving her up to the fourth-fastest swimmer ever in school history
\nin that event. She also won the 500 freestyle in 5:23.82. Gerhart captured
\nthe 200 individual medley in 2:19.74 and the 100 freestyle in 57.15.<\/p>\n
Senior Nicole Stanton (Columbia, MD\/Hammond) won the 200 freestyle in
\n2:04.86 and was second in the 100 freestyle in 57.16. Freshman Laura
\nLazenby (Falmouth, ME\/Falmouth) won the 1000 freestyle (11:31.10), junior
\nKimber Shoemaker (Berwyn, PA\/Conestoga) captured the 100 backstroke
\n(1:06.06), and sophomore Liz Thomas (Towson, MD\/Notre Dame Prep) won the
\n100 breaststroke (1:11.97). Sophomore Amy Smith (Phoenixville,
\nPA\/Phoenixville Area), Thomas, Gerhart, and Morse won the 200 medley relay
\nin 1:56.38.<\/p>\n
Senior Nicole Ludwig (Brielle, NJ\/Manasquan) finished second in both the
\n200 individual medley (2:26.37) and the 100 breaststroke (1:14.60), while
\njunior Brittany Siburt (Stevensville, MD\/Kent Island) was second in the
\n1000 freestyle (11:35.87), sophomore Cailin Eisele (Egg Harbor Township,
\nNJ\/Egg Harbor Township) placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:03.71), and
\nSmith was second in the 500 freestyle (5:33.46).<\/p>\n
Swimming as an exhibition, Eisele, Smith, junior Rebecca Lee (Haddonfield,
\nNJ\/Haddonfield), and Stanton turned in the fastest time in the 200
\nfreestyle relay, finishing in 1:48.75.<\/p>\n
The men were led by freshman Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME\/Westbrook) and
\nsophomore Chris Soper (Towson, MD\/Loyola Blakefield), who each won two
\nindividual events.<\/p>\n
Violette won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.66 and the 100 backstroke in 57.18.
\nSoper took the 50 freestyle in a Washington College season-best time of
\n22.19 to become the Shoremen's ninth-fastest swimmer ever in that event.
\nSoper also won the 100 freestyle in 49.93 and swam the freestyle leg of
\nthe winning and pool-record setting 200 medley relay. Senior Brandon
\nBecker (Jamison, PA\/Central Bucks East), senior Alex Thomas (Towson,
\nMD\/Calvert Hall), and sophomore Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA\/Benedictine
\nMilitary) joined Soper in the record-setting relay as they finished in a
\ntime of 1:41.47.<\/p>\n
Thomas added a first-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:07.04
\nand a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in a WC season-best time
\nof 1:00.93. Pollock was first in the 100 butterfly in 54.50 and second in
\nthe 500 freestyle in 5:26.27, while junior Dan Wentzel (Exton,
\nPA\/Henderson) won the 500 freestyle in 5:16.29 and was second in the 1000
\nfreestyle in 10:45.66.<\/p>\n
Wentzel, senior Eddie Raleigh (Hanover, PA\/Southwestern), freshman Tim
\nBeadell (Timonium, MD\/Loyola Blakefield), and Violette won the 200
\nfreestyle relay in 1:33.98. Raleigh added a second-place finish in the 200
\nfreestyle (1:56.11), while Becker was second in the 100 backstroke
\n(1:00.40).<\/p>\n
Washington College returns to action Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m.
