PROVO, Utah, February 5. HISTORY was made at the Utah 4A State Championship meet. <\/p>\n
The Springville men brought home the school's first-ever state title, adding to 4A's history of parity within the men's competition.<\/p>\n
Team Scores<\/b>
\nSpringville compiled a convincing 343 points en route to the state title. Snow Canyon fell short of winning its first-ever state title, scoring a runner-up worthy 285.5 points. Murray placed third (270).<\/p>\n
On the women's side, East successfully defended its 2007 state title, winning with 372 points. Murray captured the second-place spot (292) while Timpview nearly missed overtaking Murray, settling for third with 287 points.<\/p>\n
Men's Individual Results<\/b>
\nJoe Beutler of Snow Canyon won the 4A Swimmer of the Meet award for capturing Class 4A records in each of his events. Beutler set a state standard of 1:41.95 in the 200 freestyle. Randy Belliston of Cyprus held the former state-best time of 1:42.05 that he set in 1996. Rick Morley of Cyprus set the former 4A record in the event in 1979 (1:42.22). Beutler fell just short of the state standard in the 500 freestyle with his 4:36.05 performance, but he did overtake the former 4A standard. Richard Barnes of Skyline set the former record (4:41.08) in 1991.<\/p>\n
Jake Taylor of Springville took both sprint freestyle events. He clocked a 21.94 in the 50 freestyle before smoking the 100 freestyle field with a 46.66 standard.<\/p>\n
Dane Philpot from East nabbed two individual wins as well. Philpot bested the field in both the 200 IM (1:59.27) and the 100 backstroke (53.47).<\/p>\n
Springville took two of the three relays. The contingent of Tim Call, Garrett Pope, Daniel Simmons and Eric Buzbee sprinter its way to victory in the 200 freestyle relay, clocking a 1:29.94. Calvin Clark, Cody Fullmer, Buzbee and Bryant Taylor overpowered the competition in the 400 freestyle relay, taking the meet's final event in 3:17.10.<\/p>\n
Women's Individual Results<\/b>
\nShelby Bull from East took first in each of her two individual swims. Bull touched the wall in 24.42 in the 50 freestyle before returning in the 100 freestyle, topping the competition with an event-best 52.56. East, a senior, will attend the University of Wyoming next year.<\/p>\n
Meagan Stone of Timpview corralled two wins as well. She posted the top time in the 200 IM (2:09.62) as well as in the 100 backstroke (59.15).<\/p>\n
Jill Dalhe of Cottonwood took home the female honor of 4A Swimmer of the Meet. Dalhe placed first in the 100 butterfly (57.85) and second in the 200 freestyle (1:54.91).<\/p>\n
East racked up a plethora of points by monopolizing the podium's summit in all three relay events. East's 200 medley relay grouping of Meghan Brockmeyer, Ali Davis, Winifred Lau and Bull set a 4A record with a 1:51.16 clocking. Brighton's 1984 contingent held the former standard of 1:51.60. Brockmeyer, Davis, Alina Fong and Bull teamed up in the 200 freestyle relay, sprinting to a 1:41.66 gold-medal time. Even with Bull's events maxed out, the 400 freestyle relay foursome won in dominant fashion. The team of Fong, Natalie Thatcher, Lindsay McSweeney and Lau clocked a first-place time of 3:45.93.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
