RECENTLY, <i>Swimming World<\/i> contributor and former World Masters Swimmer of the Year Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen earned the highest award on offer from the American Red Cross \u2013 The Certificate of Merit.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report in <i>The Honolulu Advertiser<\/i>, &quot;on May 15, 2007, Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen and Jason P. Dixon, both American Red Cross lifeguard instructors, helped save the life of an elderly male victim who was found in the lap swim area at the deep end of the swimming pool at Kona Community Aquatics Center.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>As stated on its web site, The Certificate of Merit is the highest award issued by the American Red Cross to an individual or team of individuals who save or sustain the life of another person(s) as a direct result of Red Cross training in the areas of first aid, CPR, aquatics, or water safety. Certificates of Merit are signed by the President of the United States, the Honorary Chairman of the American Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I have earned many awards in my lifetime, but this medal and the Certificate of Merit from the American Red Cross is by far the most rewarding since it represents saving a life. How cool is that?&quot; (the victim &quot;Bob&quot; was eighty at the time),&quot; Pipes-Neilsen said. &quot;I am a volunteer Red Cross Lifeguard\/CPR instructor and I teach others how to react in a situation such as this.
