COLUMBIA, Missouri, January 26. JUNIOR co-captain Danielle Herrmann and junior Maria Mayrovich each recorded three event victories as the Jayhawks defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes, 144-89, at the Missouri Aquatics Center Saturday. KU competed at the neutral site against the Hawkeyes in its second-to-last dual meet of the 2007-08 season, improving its record to 6-2 (1-1 Big 12).<\/p>\n
While the Jayhawks only scored the meet against the Hawkeyes, Iowa took part in the double-dual against both Kansas and the Missouri Tigers. Swimmers from all three teams swam in the same heat of each event. <\/p>\n
KU started the meet strong, recording a first-place victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Lauren Bonfe, Herrmann, Ashley Leidigh and Mayrovich finished with a time of 1:44.14. Sophomore Ashley Robinson stole the 1000-yard freestyle (10:05.39) and finished second in the 500-yard free (4:57.79), while Emily Lanteigne finished second in the 200-yard free (1:50.04). <\/p>\n
Mayrovich repeated in the 50 and 100-yard free races, finishing first in both, with times of 23.47 and 50.47, respectively, while Herrmann also added two more victories in the 200-yard IM (2:04.30) and 200-yard breast (2:18.53). Leidigh competed in the 200-yard butterfly, racing to a time of 2:04.49, good for a fourth-place finish. Freshman Brittany Potter wasn't far behind in fifth (2:06.43), stacking depth for the 'Hawks. Senior Terri Schramka rounded out the day in swimming for KU, finishing third in the 200-yard backstroke.<\/p>\n
On the diving front, senior Jenny Roberts dove her way to a second-place finish in the three-meter competition with 273.40 points. Freshman diver Erin Mertz (246.55) and junior Hannah McMacken (243.90)went one-two on the one-meter board for the Jayhawks to round out the competition against the Hawkeyes. <\/p>\n
"We had a really solid meet today with Iowa," Campbell said. "The team faced a really great challenge in getting up early and getting on the bus to compete this morning. It was good practice for conference. Our divers dove very good on both boards and we were solid in a number of swimming events."<\/p>\n
KU will take on the Iowa State Cyclones in its last Big 12 dual meet before heading to the 2008 Big 12 Conference Championships in Austin, Texas. The Jayhawks will face the Cyclones at 6 p.m. (CST), Feb. 8, in Ames, Iowa, at Beyer Pool on the ISU campus.<\/p>\n
