MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, January 19. THE ninth-ranked University of Minnesota men's swimming diving team improved to 4-1 in dual meet action with a dominating 173-110 victory over Arizona State this afternoon at University Aquatic Center. The Gophers were led by Curt Carlson, Colin Lee-To and Russ Payne, who each won two individual events. Minnesota won 11 of 16 events overall including both relays.<\/p>\n
"I am very, very happy with our performance," head coach Dennis Dale said. "Many of our guys performed well. I felt like our distance guys were a little tired from training trip but several guys from that group swam well. Our divers did an excellent job. They have been training hard and did a great job.<\/p>\n
"Curt Carlson was fantastic. He won two races and had three lifetime bests. I was really happy with Russ Payne, Jason Timmer and Colin Lee-To as well. Mike Richards also had a nice meet for us."<\/p>\n
Event-by-event recap
\n200 Medley Relay
\nMinnesota cruised to an easy win in the 200 medley relay. David Plummer opened a slight lead for the Gophers and Colin Lee-To opened a nice lead on the breaststroke leg to give the essentially put away the race. Anthony Portela and Jason Timmer finishsed off the race in 1:28.63. The Gophers finished 1-2-3 with the B team of Jared White, Jon Roberts, Russ Payne and Steve Miller finishing in 1:31.29 and the C team of Peter Mullee, Ivan Gutesa, Matt Engel and Michael Richards was third in 1:31.84. The Gophers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 strong finish gave them a large 15-2 lead after one event.<\/p>\n
1000 Freestyle
\nTwo of the top distance freestylers in the nation set up one of the most anticipated races of day in the 1000 free. Holmes took an early lead but Nuess pulled ahead at the 400-yard mark, taking a second lead at the halfway point. Nuess gradually expanded his lead the remainder of the race, beating Holmes by just over four seconds. Nuess finished in 9:15.98 and Holmes took second in 9:20.06. Michael Daup took third for the Gophers in 9:37.99 and Nico Zebley was fourth in 9:46.99.<\/p>\n
200 Freestyle
\nThe Gophers dominated the 200 freestyle, taking the top three spots. Curt Carlson posted a strong time of 1:38.09 to take first. Mike Woodson placed second in 1:38.50 and Tyler Schmidt was third in 1:40.15. At this point, Minnesota had taken at 40-15.<\/p>\n
3-Meter Diving
\nMinnesota\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s three divers all posted strong scores but it wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t enough to topple Arizona State\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Bill Sweeney, who won with a score of 309.68. Cole Young tallied a 293.10 to take second and Drew Brown was third with 288.07 points. Tyler Jepsen had 247.27 points to finish fourth.<\/p>\n
"Drew\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s day started with a little but of disappointment on 1-meter," diving coach Jason Baumann said. "Being a freshman, he has made multiple changes in his technique. Between performances, I wanted Drew to list things about each of his dives that he was going to attempt on 3-meter. We reviewed them and simplified. On 3-meter, he did a good job of putting that all together and he could have actually done better if he hit all of his dives to what he is capable of. He has the potential to score 400 points. He can be an elite diver.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
100 Backstroke
\nRuss Payne made a strong final turn to pull ahead of teammate David Plummer in the final lap to win in 49.35. Plummer was second in 49.49 and Arizona State\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Ante Cvitkovic was third in 50.39.<\/p>\n
100 Breaststroke
\nThe Gophers put three All-Americans on the blocks for the 100 breaststroke and junior Colin Lee-To turned in a blazing 54.17, just .08 off his career-best time to win the event. His time was easily an NCA B cut standard. Jason Timmer also posted an NCAA B cut in 54.90 place second.<\/p>\n
200 Butterfly
\nIn the 200 butterfly, sophomore Alex Wold held off a late burst by ASU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Sean Boyle to post the victory. Wold clocked a time of 1:48.86. Adam Weis placed third for the Gophers in 1:51.56.<\/p>\n
50 Freestyle
\nLee-To completely dominated the 50 freestyle to post his second win in the last three events. He took an immediate lead off a great start and blew away the field off his turn. His time of 20.15 was a career-best and is the 29th-fastest time in the nation this year. Michael Richards was a distant second in 20.70 and ASU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Steve Neuwert was third in 20.75. The Gophers 1-2 finish afforded them a 108-41 lead.<\/p>\n
100 Freestyle
\nCarlson continued a strong afternoon in the 100 freestyle, clocking a season-best time of 44.74 to pull away for the win. Woodson was a distant second in 45.39 and Arizona State\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Neuwert was third in 45.65.<\/p>\n
200 Backstroke
\nPayne and Plummer faced off again in the 200 backstroke with Payne opening a body-length lead after 100 yards. Payne was able to pull away down the stretch for the victory with a time of 1:47.33. Plummer hung on to second place by touching out ASU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Ante Cvitkovic by .02 seconds with a time of 1:50.88.<\/p>\n
200 Breaststroke
\nThe trio of Lee-To, Timmer and Roberts hit the blocks again for the Gophers in the 200 breaststroke. Timmer took a large lead in the first 100 yards and closed well, posting an easy victory with a time of 2:01.98. Ivan Gutesa took second for Minnesota in 2:05.15 and Lee-To was third in 2:06.04. Minnesota received first place points only the rest of the meet after securing the victory. Minnesota led 135-61 after the 200 breast.<\/p>\n
500 Freestyle
\nAn exciting race in the middle lanes took place in the 500 free between Nuess, Holmes and Ray Betuzzi. Nuess took a slim lead by the halfway point. Holmes made a brief burst at the 350-yard mark but Nuess found another gear and extended his lead. Holmes put forth another burst in the final 100 but Nuess was able hold off the Gopher junior on the final lap for the win. Nuess clocked a 4:30.97 and Holmes touched in 4:32.32. Betuzzi was third in 4:35.27.<\/p>\n
100 Butterfly
\nSean Boyle held off a strong kick from Woodson in the 100 butterfly to win in 49.39. Woodson was second in 49.54. The Gopher senior made up almost a body length on the final lap but was unable to overtake Boyle. Portela placed third with a time of 50.30.<\/p>\n
400 Individual Medley
\nPayne and Wold exchanged leads several times early in the 400 individual medley but Payne surged ahead by a body length in the backstroke leg but Nuess made a run in the breaststroke. The nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s top-ranked swimmer in the event pulled ahead of Payne by a body in the breaststroke and was able to hold off Payne in the freestyle. Nuess finished in 3:53.66. Payne touched second in 3:57.06 and Wold was third in 3:58.32.<\/p>\n
3-Meter Diving
\nThe Gophers received a huge boost on the 3-meter board as Drew Brown tallied a career-best 343.80 to clinch the win. His score was easily an NCAA Zone qualifier. Cole Young took second with a solid score of 328.88 and Sweeney was third for Arizona State with a score of 311.55. Jepsen scored a career-high 291.75 to placed fourth.<\/p>\n
200 Free Relay
\nMinnesota\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s B relay team held off the A team down the stretch to secure the win in 1:21.77. Michael Richards almost caught Jon Roberts on the final leg but Roberts was able to hold off the late surge. The B team finished in 1:21.93. Minnesota\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s winning team consisted of Woodson, Miller, Schmidt and Roberts.<\/p>\n
The No. 8 University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team defeated No. 17 Arizona State 170-129. The Gophers were led by junior Yuen Kobayashi and freshman Jillian Tyler who each won two individual events.<\/p>\n
"Our girls keep responding even under adverse conditions," co-head coach Kelly Kremer said. "We handled meet well and I happy to get out of here with a win. Starting meet with a 1-2 finish in 1000 and 200 really got the ball rolling. That was a hard double for Christine and Yuen but it really got the team off to a good start.<\/p>\n
"We were so concerned about (Arizona State\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s) sprints. To win the 50 and 100 was great. Our divers were also great. It was a true team effort."<\/p>\n
200 Medley Relay
\nArizona State started the meet strong with a win in the 200 medley relay. Their time of 1:42.56 was almost a second better than Minnesota\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time of 1:43.53, posted by Roxane Akradi, Jillian Tyler, Megan Braun and Stacy Busack.<\/p>\n
1000 Freestyle
\nJunior Yuen Kobayashi took an immediate lead and held a three-body length lead over teammate Christine Jennings at the 500-yard mark while Sun Devil freshman Christine Mauro ran third. Kobayashi continued to open her lead, eventually winning by a half-lap in a time of 9:53.25. Jennings touched second in 10:03.15 and Mauro was third in 10:12.72.<\/p>\n
200 Freestyle
\nFour Gopher All-Americans took the blocks in the 200 freestyle including Kobayashi, Meredith McCarthy, Christine Jennings and Jenny Shaughnessy. Shaughnessy opened a slight lead at the 100-yard mark but Kobayashi took a lead with a lap to go and held off a tight field with a time of 1:50.28 to post her second consecutive event win. Jennings made a strong finish to take second in 1:50.36 and ASU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Jen Beckberger was third in 1:50.57. The Gophers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 strong event gave them a 34-21 lead.<\/p>\n
3-Meter Diving
\nMinnesota\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s diving corps posted a nice effort in the 3-meter event. Jacqueline Schroeder posted a career-best score of 285.75 to claim first place. Hillary Provo gave Minnesota a 1-2 finish with a career-best 260.25 to take second. ASU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Erin Hobbs was third with a score of 257.70. Schroeder's score was an NCAA Zone qualifier.<\/p>\n
100 Backstroke
\nArizona State\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Caitlin Andrew breezed to a win in the 100 backstroke in 54.75 and Akradi took second for the Gophers in 56.40. Deidre DeWall placed third in 58.00.<\/p>\n
100 Breaststroke
\nTyler buried the field in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.41 while ASU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Sara McDaniel was second in 1:04.05. Minnesota\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Alicia Jensen was third in 1:04.93.<\/p>\n
200 Butterfly
\nAshton Aubry posted a time of 2:01.19 to cruise to a victory for the Sun Devils in the 200 butterfly but Minnesota was able to finish second and third. Molly Belk placed second in 2:03.86 and Megan Braun took third in 2:03.93.<\/p>\n
50 Freestyle
\nBusack pulled ahead in the final 15 yards to claim the win for Minnesota in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.53. Arizona\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Jess Perazzo followed with a time of 23.74 and McCarthy was third in 23.90. The Gophers owned a 91-59 lead following the event.<\/p>\n
100 Freestyle
\nBusack posted her second win of the meet, claiming the 100 free in 51.10. She held off ASU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Jen Beckberger (51.23) and McCarthy (51.44). Busack\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s win helped expand the Gophers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 lead to 117-71.<\/p>\n
200 Backstroke
\nAndrew completed a sweep of the backstroke events for the Sun Devils, winning with a time of 2:00.83. The event ended up being the best of the day for ASU as Rikka Brunner took second in 2:02.51. Akradi was third for Minnesota in 2:03.03 and Shaughnessy was fourth in 2:04.07.<\/p>\n
200 Breaststroke
\nTyler posted her second win of the afternoon in the 200 breast, easily winning in 2:16.84. Jensen clocked a strong time of 2:18.86 to take second and Kait Strickland rounded out the top three in 2:20.30. Minnesota opened a 139-87 lead with the effort in the event.<\/p>\n
500 Freestyle
\nKobayashi and Jennings had an outstanding race in the 500 free. The teammates were neck and neck after 300 yards. Heading into the final 50 yards, Kobayashi held a narrow .30 second lead but Jennings had the better kick, outlasting Kobayashi with a time of 4:51.63, denying her a third win of the day. Kobayashi clocked a time of 4:52.11. Mauro placed third in 5:00.28.<\/p>\n
100 Butterfly
\nAubry finished a sweep of the butterfly events, winning the 100 in 55.35. Braun was second in 56.47 and Kaylee Jamison was third in 56.62. Danielle Ridder was fourth in 56.93. Minnesota led 162-102 following the 100 fly.<\/p>\n
1-Meter Diving
\nSchroeder capped an outstanding day with a win on the 1-meter board with a score of 269.31 and a sweep of the diving events. Hobbs placed second for ASU and Alex Barstad was third with a tally of 252.89. Schroeder\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s score was an NCAA Zone qualifier.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This is the culmination of our winter training and it being the hardest week of training of the year," diving coach Jason Baumann said. "Our divers responded with an extremely emotional and gutty performance. I was thrilled to see Jaq make the changes and be successful in the things that we have been working on. All of our kids had some outstanding performances today. We had several lifetime best scores.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
200 IM
\nBrunner posted a dominating performance in the 200 IM, coasting to a win in 2:00.96. Tyler was denied a third win of day, finishing second with a time of 2:06.16. Shaughnessy was third in 2:06.44.<\/p>\n
200 Free Relay
\nASU took the 200 free relay in 1:33.27 to complete a relay sweep. Minnesota was second in 1:34.81. The Gophers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 A team consisted of Busack, McCarthy, Holtmeyer and Akradi.<\/p>\n
