WASHINGTON D.C. January 18. THE American University men's and women's swimming and diving teams celebrated senior night, marking the last time that seven Eagles would compete at home in the Robert H. Frailey Pool. The men's team sent Joe Coronato, Jeremy Koss, Dan Nagelberg and Taylor Smith off against Georgetown while the women's team competed against both Georgetown and James Madison in the home finale for Melinda Gilbert, Alison Katsigiannis and Meghan Thiel.<\/p>\n
The women's team's win was highlighted by six times good enough to crack AU's all-time top 10. Thiel earned swimming's version of a hat trick with wins in the 200, 500 and 1000 free, and placed 10th, seventh and third on AU's all-time lists, respectively. Dorothy Isaacs registered in the record book at ninth with her win in the 50 free and also placed second in the 100 free with a time good enough for eighth all-time at AU. Eleanor Clay won both the 100 and 200 breast with her 200 time marking the eighth fastest in American history.<\/p>\n
Katsigiannis swam to a fourth-place finish in the 100 breast in her final home meet and Gilbert's last swim at home was highlighted by a sixth place showing as part of the 200 medley relay team along with Morgan Haycock, Katsigiannis and Adela Smith. Mary Margaret Lopez was also a winner for AU, taking first in the 200 fly.<\/p>\n
It was all about the upperclassmen on the men's side. Coronato led the Eagles' charge with victories in the 50, 100 and 200 free, while Nagelberg placed second in the 500 free, third in the 1000 free and fifth in the 200 IM. Koss took second in the 1 meter diving competition and Smith was a part of AU's third place 200 free relay team along with Jon Bateman, John Winters and Rick Driscoll.<\/p>\n
AU's male youngsters also put in a good showing, with victories coming from Matt Pelletier and Michael O'Brien. Pelletier won the 100 back and placed second in the 200 back, while O'Brien won the 1 meter dive. Eric Sveum also had a strong night, taking second in the 50 and 100 free, and third in the 100 fly. <\/p>\n
