DENVER, Colorado, January 12. SPARKED by the performances of their four seniors, the University of Denver swimming and diving teams swept Air Force Saturday afternoon, with the DU men's team earning a 146-92 win over the Falcons and the women taking a 132-96 decision. DU's men won every event in the meet and the Pioneer women had another solid performance, winning 10 races in the final home meet of the season for DU.
\nDU's four outgoing seniors, Marcus Christianson (Hutchinson, Minn.), Serge Wenzel (Englewood, Colo.), Nathan West (Englewood, Colo.) and Kelsey Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.) produced three victories on the afternoon. <\/p>\n
West had the first individual victory for DU's men's team on Saturday, as he won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:50.06, just edging Washington's Tom Hansen (9:50.41) for the top spot. West later won the 500-freestyle as well, winning with a time of 4:44.15.<\/p>\n
Junior Blake Worsley (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) continued his impressive 2007-08 season Saturday, as he won two more races. His first win came when he captured the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.29 and he later won the 100-freestyle, winning by more than a second with a time of 45.48.<\/p>\n
Junior Nick Brunger (Castle Rock, Colo.) was also a double winner Saturday, as he won the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 1:53.78, and later won the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:08.00.<\/p>\n
Other winners for the Pioneers Saturday include Jeff Giddens (Carlsbad, Calif.) in the 50-freestyle (21.31); Garth Summers (Portland, Ore.) in the 200-butterfly (1:52.47); Daniel Vollmer (Ajax, Ontario) in the 200-backstroke (1:52.29). Junior Aaron Feight (Englewood, Colo.) also captured both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.<\/p>\n
On the women's side, Totura led the way once again, winning the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:10.07 and leading off two relay swims. <\/p>\n
Sophomore Lindsay Brown (Allen, Texas) led things off for the Pioneers with a win in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 10:37.71 as DU took all three top places. Olivia Dean (Aurora, Colo.) kept the momentum going for the Pioneers in the next race, as she won the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:56.58. Dean also later won the 200-butterfly with a time of 2:10.66. <\/p>\n
Melissa Greeves (Melbourne, Australia) led another 1-2-3 DU sweep with a win in the 50-freestyle (24.96), just edging teammate Erika Ross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) (25.01). <\/p>\n
Freshman Hayley Ettelson (San Diego, Calif.) got DU back on the winning side after a couple of second place finishes as she won the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:13.77. Sterling Slocum (Parker, Colo.) later won the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:26.56. Freshman Rose Farruggia (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the first diving competition of her career as she captured the women's 3-meter dive with a score of 201.15. <\/p>\n
DU is next in action on Friday, Jan. 18 when the Pioneers travel to take on Northern Colorado.<\/p>\n
