COLUMBUS, Ohio, January 7. THE Ohio State women's swimming and diving team improved to 5-0 in dual meets this season with a strong performance over in-state competitor Wright State at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Friday evening. The Buckeyes defeated the Raiders, 164.5-106.5, in each team's first meet of the New Year.<\/p>\n
"We have some fatigue, more from the last 10 days than the season as a whole," Ohio State head coach Bill Dorenkott said. "But it was nice to get back out there racing."<\/p>\n
Regardless of the fatigue factor, the team of Megan Detro, Lisa Narum, Sam Cheverton and Anita Beck came out strong by opening the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:47.83). The winning continued as senior captain Cheverton took first-place in the 1000 freestyle in 10:13.96, with fellow Buckeyes Angela Severn and Emily Creran finishing in second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
Freshman Alex Norris recorded her first win of the night in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.13 (Detro was second). Severn followed Norris with a victory in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.32 (Libby Hunsche was second), stretching the Ohio State lead to 88.5-42.5 heading into a short break in the action.<\/p>\n
Recording individual victories in the second half of the meet for the 18th-ranked Buckeyes were Molly Osterhage in the 100 freestyle in 53.35, Norris in the 500 freestyle in 4:55.66, Phoebe Cater in the 100 butterfly in 56.68 and Detro in the 200 IM in 2:07.15.<\/p>\n
While the Buckeyes were in control of the meet from start to finish, there is still room for improvement for the Scarlet and Gray as the team prepares for the upcoming stretch of competition – including a match with Toledo tomorrow.<\/p>\n
"I'm not displeased with the overall times, but I'm not pleased with the number of touches we're losing. We have room to get better," Dorenkott said. "I love these multiple day events because they help challenge our focus and toughness."<\/p>\n
The divers also had a strong performance with Bianca Alvarez picking up wins in both events – the three-meter springboard with 370.40 points and the one-meter springboard with 337.60 points.<\/p>\n
Ohio State returns to the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion tomorrow to take on the Toledo Rockets at 1 p.m. Admission is free.<\/p>\n
